DATE: 11/25/2019
WARD:
SUBJECT: Discuss potential Youth Commission project ideas.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
BACKGROUND:
Pursuant to City of Bakersfield Municipal Code 2.60.060, the Bakersfield Youth Commission is
to "Host an annual youth conference to identify local youth concerns and needs and "Educate
and inspire local youth involvement in relevant issues".
In June 2019, the Bakersfield Youth Commission hosted a "Sing Out, Speak Out" event at the
Spectrum Amphitheater in Riverwalk Park to educate local youth about city government and the
responsibilities of some of the departments. They deployed a survey to engage local teens in
the community to determine a number of concerns that could be discussed as potential topics to
educate local youth with the assistance of City staff.
Topics included:
• Youth Homelessness
• Litter
• SmokingNaping
It is the goal of the Bakersfield Youth Commission to further engage youth by providing outreach
services that impact young generations and contribute to meaningful solutions.
