Two Portervillefirefighters were killed while battling a fire at the Porterville library Tuesday night (February 18) and in response, BFD Engine Company 11 (right) is assisting Porterville Fire with handling emergency calls in that city. Bakersfield Chief Staff are also in contact with the Porterville staff for any other assistance that can be provided. Visit Bakersfield has unveiled its latest promotional piece to help visitors spend their money in Californian’s ninth-largest city. Known as the “lure brochure,” this full-color product will target travelers heading between nearby national parks to the north (Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon) and Death Valley and Las Vegas. Travelers often have to pass through Bakersfield to reach those destinations. The brochure will be distributed around the national parks and throughout Las Vegas to provide Bakersfield information to those travelers before they arrive here, giving them information on things to see and do in Bakersfield. Majorfunding for the lure brochure comes from the Kern County Tourism Promotion Grant Program. This is Visit Bakersfield’s third successful application to that grant program. Development Services Director Christopher Boyle is pleased to announce thepromotion of Paul Johnson as the City’s new Planning Director. Mr. Johnson will be General Information February 21, 2020 Page 2 part of the Development Service Department’s executive management team along with Building Director Phil Burns. For the past five years, Mr. Johnson has been a Principal Planner with Economic Development and more recently with Current Operations, leading staff in the land use permitting process. Originally from Oregon, Mr. Johnson came to Bakersfield after a 22-year career in the Air Force. He subsequently worked eight and a half years for the Kern County Planning Department before accepting a position with the City Planning Division in 2015. Mr. Johnson is pursuing his doctoral degree in management and we are excited to have his planning experience and skillset as assets here at the City. Mr. Johnson started work in his new role this past Monday, February 17th. Congratulations Paul! The Bakersfield Police Department’s Bomb Squad and SWAT Team recently raised money for theMendiburu Magic Foundation, a Bakersfield non-profit that works to address the unmet needs of children facing difficult health crises likecancer. The teams collaborated with Dewar’s Candy Shop for theCupid’s Challenge, raising money for the foundation. Officers were atthe shop on Eye Street downtown (right) for six hours in the morning onThursday, February 13th, helping sell hometown favorite chews for agreat cause! The Recreation and Parks Department’s Adaptive Sports adult basketball season wrapped up on Thursday, February 20th, with three final games played at the Dr.Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center on S. Owens Street (below). The Adaptive Sports program provides access and support to children and adults withcognitive and physical disabilities for sports activities. General Information February 21, 2020 Page 3 There were seven teams this season, each with 20 or more players, and around 150 to 200 supporters show up to the games! Organizations such as New Advances for People with Disabilities, SVS Bakersfield Adult Day Program, As One, and PathPoint all fielded teams this winter. All players received medals after the season ended. The department is very happy to provide this program and registration for the spring adult softball season is open until March 6th. On Friday, February 14, the Bakersfield Police Department held a Coffee with a Cop event at the Starbucks at Allen Road and Stockdale Highway (below). From 9 to 11 a.m., officers and department staff engaged with the community in a light atmosphere for honest conversations. This type of engagement helps build and strengthen rapport and relationships between the BPD and our community. Traffic Advisories Nighttime closures scheduled for eastbound Truxtun Avenue Nighttime closures have been scheduled for eastbound Truxtun Avenue from Monday, February 24th through Wednesday, February 26th. The road will be closed between Commercial Way and Empire Drive between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., each night. The nighttime closures also include the eastbound Westside Parkway off-ramp. Eastbound traffic on Truxtun Avenue and on the Westside Parkway will need to detour at Mohawk Street and use either Rosedale Highway or California Avenue while work is underway. The closures are needed for finish work and to remove signs. Westbound Truxtun Avenue and the westbound Truxtun Avenue on-ramp to the Westside Parkway are expected to remain open while work is underway. All lane and the off- ramp are expected to re-open in time for the morning commute. Work may be rescheduled without notice due to unforeseen circumstances. The Thomas Roads Improvement Program apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause the traveling public. Nighttime lane closures on State Route 99 Nighttime lane closures are planned for State Route 99 on Monday, February 24th, between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The closures will be in the vicinity of the junction with State Route 58 and will include the two inside southbound lanes and the inside northbound lane on State Route 99. One southbound lane and two northbound lanes will remain open to traffic while work is underway. The closures are needed for work on the widening of the westbound State Route 58 bridge. Work may be rescheduled without notice due to unforeseen circumstances. Please slow down and watch for construction workers and equipment while driving in the vicinity of this work. Event Notifications Recreation and Parks will host the Arbor Day Tree Planting on Saturday, March 7th, at Patriots park. Mayor Karen Goh will present a proclamation at 9 a.m. The public is invited to help plant 10 trees throughout the park. Volunteers should remember to bring shovels and gloves and to wear closed-toe shoes while planting. Volunteers of all ages are welcome as it is a great family event!
