Street racing creates an extremely dangerous environment and endangers everyone on and near the roadway. Prior to the arrival of Covid-19, plans were progressing toward a community based collaborative alternative; street racing events at the Kern County Raceway. With the assistance of Vice Mayor Parlier, several community businesses and car clubs were working to collaborate with the Police Department to organize and fund these special events. After sustained enforcement efforts early in the year and with the arrival of Covid-19, there was a decrease in the frequency of community complaints and reports of illegal street racing for a period of time in the spring. However, there has been a recent emergence in illegal street racing activities and we have once again began the special enforcement operations. Over the last eight weeks, we have conducted enforcement operations and have cited over 193 drivers and impounded 97 vehicles. We have also recovered firearms and stolen vehicles. We will continue to utilize a holistic approach to address this serious public safety issue. We will:  Engage in enforcement/prevention activities  Partner with other local enforcement agencies  Utilize social media and develop original content to educate and inform the community on the dangers of street racing.  Utilize technology (surveillance trailers, speed trailers, traffic signage..etc) to enhance prevention efforts.  Continue to collaborate with community partners to reduce the activity of street racing on our local roadways.
