Home My WebLink About04/02/2021CC OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER April 2, 2021 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Christian Clegg, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information Notable Items  The ever-popular Clean City Initiative pop-up bulky item drive-thru events return this weekend, as Solid Waste will hold one at 4200 Panorama Drive – at the intersection with Columbus Street – and one in the parking lot of Kaiser Permanente Sports Village at the corner of McKee and Ashe Roads. Crews will be accepting items from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 3. These events are made possible through the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure. So far this year, almost 135 tons in large items have been collected through these events.  Streets Division crews completed a bike path improvement project this week. The path was realigned on the west side of Stockdale Highway and the south side entrance to the path was repaved (below). After the work was completed, the area was restriped as well. You can see the new alignment marked on the attached map.  This week the City’s Traffic Control Division learned that it will receive more than $830,000 in Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funding for two projects that General Information April 2, 2021 Page 2 will improve pedestrian safety in Bakersfield. The City was awarded $246,100 to install Pedestrian Flashing Beacons at the crosswalk on Old Farm Road in front of Veterans Elementary School near Cherry Valley Avenue, and at the crosswalk on Mountain Vista Drive in front of Earl Warren Jr. High School near Mountain Snow Lane. The other project includes upgrading signal heads and mast arms for traffic signals at Beale Avenue and Monterey Street, as well as at Beale Avenue and Niles Street. That project will receive $586,000 in funding.  The City’s Animal Care Center is set to host its April low-cost vaccine and licensing clinic Saturday, April 3 at Wilson Park (2400 Wilson Road) from 9 a.m. to noon. This event will be drive-thru style and precautions will be in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Recreation & Parks Department’s Movie in the Park night was a hit with families last week! We had 127 people show up at Kaiser Permanente Sports Village on Friday, March 26 to watch Disney’s “The Jungle Book” (right). Everyone was very appreciative of the event and all followed the social distancing requirements in place, including mask wearing and using the sections set up by Recreation & Parks staff. We expect more of these types of events to be held in the future. Traffic Advisories  Nighttime closure on California Avenue California Avenue will be closed in both directions between Easton Drive and Marella Way from April 4 through April 8. This closure is scheduled from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The closure is needed to remove falsework from the westbound bridge. Traffic will be routed using Oak Street to Truxtun Avenue to Mohawk Street if traveling west, and Mohawk Street to Truxtun Avenue to Oak Street if traveling east. Construction schedules may change without notice due to unforeseen circumstances. The Thomas Roads Improvement Program apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause the traveling public. General Information April 2, 2021 Page 3  Alternating lane closures on southbound Hwy 99 Nighttime lane closures have been scheduled for the southbound State Route 99 from the State Route 58 connector ramp to the Ming Avenue off-ramp. The closure will take place on April 6 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. alternating three lanes, with at least one lane remaining open at all times. The Ming Avenue off-ramp and State Route 58 connector ramp will remain open. The closure is needed for K-rail setup and striping. Construction schedules may change without notice due to unforeseen circumstances. The Thomas Roads Improvement Program apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause the traveling public. Compassion • Accountability • Professionalism For Immediate Release March 28, 2021 The City of Bakersfield Animal Control unit would like to notify city residents the April 3rd, 2021 vaccine clinic is scheduled to be held at Wilson Park, at 2400 Wilson Road from 9 a.m. to noon. Due to ongoing restrictions and precautions being taken amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, the following safeguards will be in place: 1. Clinic stations will be set up on Benton Street; however, this will be a drive through event. 2. Please remain in your vehicle and staff will make contact to distribute forms and provide directions on how to complete. 3. Customers without vehicles will be asked to complete the form and return at a designated time for services. 4. Bi-lingual staff will be available. 5. We do not provide vaccines for cats at the outdoor clinics. 6. All customers will be required to wear masks when interacting with Animal Control staff, medical staff or volunteers.
