OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
May 21, 2021 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Christian Clegg, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information
Notable Items
The Bakersfield Police
Department held a memorial service in honor of police K-9
Jango at the Mechanics Bank
Convention Center on Friday,
May 21 (top and bottom right).
The service was attended by
hundreds of department
employees, and due to COVID-
19 restrictions it was also live
streamed on social media for the
general public. Jango was shot
and killed on April 27, having
served the Bakersfield Police
Department and his human
partner for more than three
years.
The Solid Waste Division
collected nearly 14 tons of trash
during the pop-up large trash item drop-off events held on May
15. Nearly 90 vehicles brought
13.83 tons (27,660 pounds) of trash at the Aera Park and
Bakersfield Municipal Airport sites on Saturday, May 15. That includes 30 mattresses, 37 e-waste items and five tires.
These events are part of Bakersfield's Clean City Initiative, which is funded by the

Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure. The Clean City Initiative aims to reduce illegal dumping and debris seen around the City, improving quality of life for our
residents and visitors. More events will be planned in the future and will be announced on the City’s website and social media platforms when dates and locations are
finalized.
The Bakersfield Brewery Trail kicked off on Wednesday, May 11 and exceeded all
expectations. Through the Visit Bakersfield-sponsored campaign,
participants were encouraged to check-
in at five participating local breweries
along the trail to win prizes: visiting three breweries earns participants a T-shirt, and
the first 50 to check-in at all five are awarded a special Bakersfield Brewery Trail
growler!
Within the first 72 hours of the campaign, all 50 growlers were awarded and
approximately 130 t-shirts were redeemed. Having worked with numerous destination
marketing organizations in the U.S. and Canada, the software company that created
the online pass said they have never seen such a response such a short time period.
The Bakersfield Brewery Trail is still available and you can receive a free T-shirt after
checking in at three participating breweries. Go to Experience.VisitBakersfield.com to
sign up. It’s free!
The City’s Animal Care Center provided 300 vaccinations to 170 pets at May’s second low-cost vaccine and licensing clinic held at Silver Creek Park on Saturday, May 15.
In addition, 100 licenses and 54 microchips were issued as well.
The next clinic will be June 5 at Jastro Park (2900 Truxtun Avenue). There will be no
clinics held in July and August due to the expected summer heat, so the ACC held
two in May and will hold two in September to make up for those months.
If you’ve ever wanted to
learn the fastest growing
sport in the country, the
Recreation & Parks
Department is offering a beginner’s pickleball clinic
at Jastro Park’s courts (2900
Truxtun Avenue) next month.
Over four sessions, participants will learn the
fundamentals of the game, including how to serve,
block and more, as well as strategy and scoring. The
clinic will be held on

Visit Bakersfield manager David Lyman this month took a look at Bakersfield’s rebounding hotel market for the May issue of the Kern Business Journal. There are positive signs for the local economy, including hotel occupancy returning to pre-
pandemic levels recently. You can take a look at the trend, the reasons for the rebound and what it means for the Bakersfield economy here.
