HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/20/2021CC OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER August 20, 2021 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Christian Clegg, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information Notable Items  The pop-up large item trash drop-off events held Saturday, August 14, collected nearly 24,000 pounds worth of trash and recycling items! These events are part of Bakersfield’s Clean City Initiative – which is funded by the Public Safety & Vital Services Measure (Measure N) – and were held at Kaiser Permanente Sports Village (right) and near the intersection of Panorama Drive and Columbus Street. The Sports Village location collected 12,080 pounds of trash and recycling from 118 vehicles. That includes 8,620 pounds worth of trash, 42 mattresses and 21 e-waste items. The Panorama location collected 11,460 pounds of trash and recycling from 60 vehicles, including 5,200 pounds of trash and 10 mattresses. Since launching in January of this year, these pop-up trash events have collected more than 407,000 pounds of trash, more than 33,000 pounds of recycling, and 448 mattresses!  Visit Bakersfield is proud to host a National Softball Association regional tournament this weekend at the Mesa Marin Sports Complex. More than 40 teams from all around the state will be converging on Bakersfield to battle it out for bragging rights. Players, coaches and family members will be staying in Bakersfield hotels and eating at local General Information August 20, 2021 Page 2 restaurants. This is the second of eight such tournaments that are scheduled in Bakersfield in the upcoming year.  On Saturday, August 14, the Code Enforcement Rapid Response Team received a complaint about an encampment along the Kern River Corridor less than a mile west of the Mohawk Street Bridge. Six encampments were found in the area and notices to vacate the area were posted that day. This week, RRT crews performed follow-up inspections and found that by Tuesday, most of the camps were gone; on Thursday, the RRT seized a single abandoned tent. Clean-up crews made up of Code Enforcement and Recreation & Parks RRTs, as well as members of the Clean City Initiative clean teams finished the clean-up abatement. Check out the before, during and after pics (below) to see the difference these teams are making!  The Bakersfield Brewery Trail continues to grow, with the Bakersfield Beer Company joining the campaign this week! That makes seven local breweries to be part of the trail, following Dionysus Brewing joining in July. The other participants include 2nd Phase Brewing, Temblor Brewing Company, Great Change Brewing, Crusader Brewing, and Lengthwise Brewing Company. Customers interested in “trekking the trail” can sign up here. It’s free and easy, you just need a smartphone! General Information August 20, 2021 Page 3  A playground rehabilitation project at Deer Peak Park that will replace outdated equipment with upgraded new equipment is now underway! This $316,365 project will require the closure of the playground area until early November. Mesa Marin Sports Complex (Perimeter Fence Windscreen Replacement) • The RRT continued removal and replacement of the existing worn/damaged windscreens at ball diamond Field 4. 2. Bike Path @ Chester Avenue (Bollard Post Replacement) • The RRT replaced a security bollard post along the bike path on the west side of Chester Ave., adjacent to Uplands of the Kern River, due to vandalism 3. 24th Street @ C Street (Bakersfield Letters Sign) • The RRT repaired the bent letter “D” of the Bakersfield sign due to vandalism. 4. California Avenue & M Street (Encampment Clean-Up) • The RRT assisted with a BPD request regarding a homeless encampment clean-up. 1 site was addressed. • Trash was removed and taken to the City Corporation Yard for disposal inside a roll-off bin, provided by Solid Waste Department. 5. S. Union Avenue & E. 8th Street (Encampment Clean-Up) • The RRT assisted with a BPD request regarding a homeless encampment clean- up. 1 site was addressed. • Trash was removed and taken to the City Corporation Yard for disposal inside a roll-off bin, provided by Solid Waste Department. 6. San Miguel Grove (Encampment Clean-Up) • The RRT assisted Code Enforcement homeless encampment clean-ups located along the Kern River bank adjacent to San Miguel Grove. • Two trash loads were taken to Kern County Bena Landfill for disposal (total weight 8,160 lbs.) 7. Saunders Park (Restroom Security Gate Repair) • The RRT re-installed and secured the women’s restroom security gate that was vandalized due to a homeless encampment set up inside the restroom. • Code Enforcement responded to clear the homeless encampment inside of the restroom, so that necessary repairs could be completed. 8. Mill Creek @ Golden State Hwy. (Encampment Clean-Up) • The RRT assisted with a homeless encampment clean-up. 1 site was addressed. • Trash was removed and taken to the City Corporation Yard for disposal inside a roll-off bin, provided by Solid Waste Department. 9. MLK Park (Encampment Clean-Up) • The RRT along with Code Enforcement completed removal of various homeless encampments. 2 Sites were addressed. • Trash was removed and placed inside a trash truck provided by Code Enforcement. Miscellaneous 1. Lowell Shop (Bollard Post Modification & Lock Box Fabrication) • The RRT modified safety bollard posts for future use of vandalized bollards and fabricated lock boxes due to storage door vandalism. 2. River Run Blvd. & Eden Park Way (Block Wall Board-Up) • The RRT secured and boarded up a damaged block wall on the north west side, due to a vehicular accident. Ongoing Projects 1. Greystone Park (Trash Enclosure Modification) • The RRT will schedule fabrication and installation of a new cover on the existing trash enclosure. 2. McMurtrey Aquatics Center (Wrought Iron Fence Modification) • The RRT will schedule wrought iron fence modification on west side concession area to prevent illegal entry. 3. Mesa Marin Sports Complex (Perimeter Fence Windscreen Replacement) • The RRT will be replacing the ball diamond fence windscreens at all four fields. • Work will continue only on weekends until the project is completed.
