HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/07/2022CC OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER Jan. 7, 2022 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Christian Clegg, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information Notable Items  The Recreation & Parks Department held its Annual Polar Bear Plunge at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center (right) on New Year’s Day, the first time since 2020. More than 220 people braved the 47-degree weather outside, and 114 took the plunge into the 55-degree water as part of the tradition!  On Tuesday, January 11, the City of Bakersfield will celebrate its 124th year of incorporation! In 1898, residents voted to incorporate (the second time, in fact following a three-year stretch from 1873 – 1876). Join us in celebrating the anniversary!  The Solid Waste Division is hosting its first pop-up large trash item drop-off events of 2022 this Saturday, January 8. Residents can bring items too big to fit in their tan trash bins to either the parking lot at the Bakersfield Municipal Airport (2000 Union Avenue) or at the Riverlakes Ranch Community Center (3825 Riverlakes Drive) between 8 a.m. and noon. This program, which is made possible by the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure as part of our Clean City Initiative, collected more than 730,000 pounds of trash items in 2021, the first year we’ve offered General Information Jan. 7, 2022 Page 2 this free service. We expect that kind of success to continue into this year as well.  The Great 48 Bluegrass Jam returns to Bakersfield this weekend, Thursday through Sunday (January 6 – 10). This gathering of the California Bluegrass Association has been held in Bakersfield for many years, except for 2021. The Great 48 will continue to provide music jamming and workshops at the Bakersfield Marriott Convention Center Hotel. However, this year the Friday concert has been cancelled. Once again, Visit Bakersfield provided printed promotional material for the event's registration table for use by those who come to our city from many parts of California and the nation. Information on attendance requirements can be found here.  Visit Bakersfield saw a dramatic increase in retail activity during December. For the period December 5 through January 5, product sales reached $1,600. That is a 277% increase over the previous month. This was the first holiday season that Visit Bakersfield has offered locally branded products for sale and the demand for these products was great. A few of the product lines sold out completely due to demand, but supplies have since been replenished. These unique Bakersfield-branded products are available only online at BakersfieldSwag.com, or in-store at Visit Bakersfield (515 Truxtun Avenue).  If you’re looking for a softball league to play in this spring, look no further! Online registration for the Recreation & Parks Department’s Spring adult softball opened on Monday, January 3. There are men’s and co-ed leagues available. The season will begin on February 14 with evaluation games played through February 28. League games will follow starting March 1. Games will be played on multiple nights each week, but teams will play once a week.  Visit Bakersfield’s Selfie Trail and Brewery Trail continue to attract visitors from near and far. During the month of December, both trails saw a combined 200 total check-ins and 10 prize redemptions with visitors arriving from states such as Hawaii, Mississippi, Illinois, and Iowa. One Brewery Trail participant told Visit Bakersfield “This is a great activity that I was able to enjoy with my sister who was visiting from out of town. We both had a blast! This is such a good thing for Bakersfield.” For more information on the Selfie Trail and the Brewery Trail, go to VisitBakersfield.com.  The annual Holiday Grease Collection event wrapped up Friday, January 7, having collected more than 119 gallons of used cooking oil and grease at Wastewater Treatment Plan 3 since the Thanksgiving Holiday! Pouring the oil and/or grease down General Information Jan. 7, 2022 Page 3 home drains can result in clogged pipes, leading to backups and costly repairs. Thank you to everyone who utilized this free service to make sure that oil and grease is disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly way!  The first low-cost drive-thru pet vaccine and licensing clinic of 2022 is set for Saturday, January 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at The Park at River Walk. Pet owners are asked to wear a mask and take their dogs out of the vehicle so staff can safely vaccinate them. Dogs must remain on a leash during the clinic. Dogs can also be microchipped free of charge with the purchase of a license.  The Recreation & Parks Department is currently working on developing the City's 62nd public park! The Highgate Linear Park will be located at Ming and Highgate Park Boulevard and will include two new dog parks. The first phase will have a parking lot with access to the dog parks and the start of the linear park (right and below). That's expected to be complete within the next few months. Phase 2 will include a playground, fitness equipment, parking lot and picnic area and construction is expected to begin in 2024.  Visit Bakersfield is currently accepting applications for its first Bakersfield Restaurant Week! Restaurant Weeks are held in many cities throughout the U.S., celebrating local eateries. We are excited to bring this successful promotion to Bakersfield! Space for the event – which will provide restaurants with free promotion and advertising – is General Information Jan. 7, 2022 Page 4 limited to a first-come, first-served basis. Dates for the inaugural Restaurant Week will be announced later. If you are an owner of a Bakersfield-based restaurant interested in free promotion and advertising as part of Bakersfield’s Restaurant Week, please reach out to info@visitbakersfield.com. As the City looks to increase affordable housing opportunities, we’ve created a virtualworkshop through the Bakersfield Affordable Housing Strategy. The goal of the workshop is to help the City better understand the needs of the community, utilizing the feedback to help develop our affordable housing strategy. Surveys will be available until Jan. 14, 2022. The City Clerk’s Office is accepting applications to fill vacancies on the Bakersfield Youth Commission: •Ward 1: regular and alternate appointments •Ward 6: regular and alternate appointments •Ward 7: regular and alternate appointments Applicants must be City residents, current high school students at the time of appointment, and maintain as close to a 3.0 grade point average as possible. MLK Park (Electrical Cabinet Repair) • The RRT re-enforced previous repairs made to the electrical panel prevent vandalism and unauthorized access into the electrical cabinet. The RRT also painted the repaired areas to match existing cabinet color. 2. Jefferson Park (Restroom Urinal Replacement – Vandalism) • The RRT installed 2 new urinals in the men’s restroom that were broken off the wall due to vandalism. 3. MLK Park (Restroom Toilet Repair – Vandalism) • The RRT replaced a damaged flushometer in the men’s restroom due to vandalism, in addition to re-securing the base of the toilet to the floor. 4. Jefferson Park (Storage Room Door Repair – Vandalism) • The RRT secured a damaged storage room door due to vandalism. 5. Jastro Park (Restroom Toilet Repair – Vandalism) • The RRT repaired a damaged toilet flush valve in the men’s restroom due to vandalism, in addition to clearing a clogged drain line. 6. Saunders Park (Encampment Clean-Up) • The RRT assisted Code Enforcement with trash removal from homeless encampments set up behind the Pavilion at Sauders Park. • 3 sites were addressed. • Trash loads were placed inside the rear loader truck for disposal, provided by Code Enforcement. Miscellaneous 1. Area 2 – Northeast (Work Requests) • The RRT assisted Area 2 with completing work requests as needed due to personnel limitations. 2. City Hall North (Office Furniture Relocation) • The RRT relocated office furniture from City Hall North 3rd floor to the Community House for future Recreation operations. 3. Lowell Shop (Security Lock Box Fabrication) • The RRT fabricated new security lock boxes for future vandalism repairs. Ongoing Projects 1. Greystone Park (Trash Enclosure Modification) • The RRT will schedule fabrication and installation of a new cover on the existing trash enclosure. 2. Mesa Marin Sports Complex (Perimeter Fence Windscreen Replacement) • The RRT will be completing replacement of the ball diamond fence windscreens at Field 4 once the additional screens arrive.
