OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
Jan. 7, 2022 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Christian Clegg, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information
Notable Items
The Recreation & Parks
Department held its Annual Polar Bear Plunge at the McMurtrey
Aquatic Center (right) on New
Year’s Day, the first time since
2020. More than 220 people
braved the 47-degree weather
outside, and 114 took the plunge
into the 55-degree water as part
of the tradition!
On Tuesday, January 11, the City of Bakersfield will celebrate its 124th year of incorporation! In 1898,
residents voted to incorporate (the second time, in fact
following a three-year stretch from 1873 – 1876). Join us
in celebrating the anniversary!
The Solid Waste Division is hosting its first pop-up large trash item drop-off events of 2022 this Saturday, January
8. Residents can bring items too big to fit in their tan trash bins to either the parking lot at the Bakersfield Municipal
Airport (2000 Union Avenue) or at the Riverlakes Ranch Community Center (3825 Riverlakes Drive) between 8
a.m. and noon.
This program, which is made possible by the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure as part of our
Clean City Initiative, collected more than 730,000 pounds of trash items in 2021, the first year we’ve offered

this free service. We expect that kind of success to continue into this year as well.
The Great 48 Bluegrass Jam returns to Bakersfield this weekend, Thursday through
Sunday (January 6 – 10). This gathering of the California Bluegrass Association has been held in Bakersfield for many years, except for 2021. The Great 48 will continue to
provide music jamming and workshops at the Bakersfield Marriott Convention Center Hotel. However, this year the Friday concert has been cancelled. Once again, Visit
Bakersfield provided printed promotional material for the event's registration table for use by those who come to our city from many parts of California and the nation.
Information on attendance requirements can be found here.
Visit Bakersfield saw a dramatic increase in retail activity during December. For the period December 5 through January 5, product sales reached $1,600. That is a 277%
increase over the previous month.
This was the first holiday season that Visit Bakersfield has offered locally branded
products for sale and the demand for these products was great. A few of the product
lines sold out completely due to demand, but supplies have since been replenished.
These unique Bakersfield-branded products are available only online at
BakersfieldSwag.com, or in-store at Visit Bakersfield (515 Truxtun Avenue).
If you’re looking for a softball league to play in this spring, look no further! Online
registration for the Recreation & Parks Department’s Spring adult softball opened on
Monday, January 3. There are men’s and co-ed leagues available. The season will
begin on February 14 with evaluation games played through February 28. League
games will follow starting March 1. Games will be played on multiple nights each
week, but teams will play once a week.
Visit Bakersfield’s Selfie Trail and Brewery Trail continue to attract visitors
from near and far. During the month of
December, both trails saw a combined 200 total check-ins and 10 prize
redemptions with visitors arriving from states such as Hawaii, Mississippi, Illinois,
and Iowa.
One Brewery Trail participant told Visit Bakersfield “This is a great activity that I was able to enjoy with my sister who was visiting from out of town. We both had a blast!
This is such a good thing for Bakersfield.”
For more information on the Selfie Trail and the Brewery Trail, go to VisitBakersfield.com.
The annual Holiday Grease Collection event wrapped up Friday, January 7, having
collected more than 119 gallons of used cooking oil and grease at Wastewater Treatment Plan 3 since the Thanksgiving Holiday! Pouring the oil and/or grease down

home drains can result in clogged pipes, leading to backups and costly repairs. Thank
you to everyone who utilized this free service to make sure that oil and grease is disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly way!
The first low-cost drive-thru pet vaccine and licensing clinic of 2022 is set for Saturday,
January 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at The Park at River Walk. Pet owners are asked to wear a mask and take their dogs out of the vehicle so staff can safely vaccinate
them. Dogs must remain on a leash during the clinic. Dogs can also be microchipped free of charge with the purchase of a license.
The Recreation & Parks Department is currently working on developing the City's 62nd public park! The Highgate Linear Park will be located at Ming and
Highgate Park Boulevard and will
include two new dog parks. The first
phase will have a parking lot with
access to the dog parks and the
start of the linear park (right and
below). That's expected to be
complete within the next few
months. Phase 2 will include a
playground, fitness equipment,
parking lot and picnic area and
construction is expected to begin in
2024.
Visit Bakersfield is currently accepting applications for its first Bakersfield Restaurant Week! Restaurant Weeks are held in many cities throughout the U.S., celebrating local eateries. We are excited to bring this successful promotion to Bakersfield! Space for
