HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/01/22CC OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER July 1, 2022 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: Christian Clegg, City Manager SUBJECT: General Information City Offices will be closed Monday, July 4, for the Independence Day holiday. Curbside trash and recycling services will be delayed one day. Independence Day Holiday  The City is proud to host its annual Independence Day Celebration, including a free- to-attend fireworks show at the Park at River Walk on Monday, July 4. Sponsored by the Robert & Kari Grimm Family Foundation and Mechanics Bank, the festivities begin at 6 p.m. and Foster Campbell takes to the Dignity Health Amphitheater stage at 6:30 p.m. for a live musical performance. The fireworks show will start at 9:15 p.m. and will be live streamed on 23ABC’s website, TurnTo23.com, or by downloading their app for Roku, Apple TV or Fire TV if you prefer to watch from home.  The use of illegal fireworks always rises as we get closer to the Independence Day holiday, and the Bakersfield Fire Department expects this year to be no different. In addition to patrols by Arson investigators and officers from the Bakersfield Police Department, the Fire Department will be using drones to track violators. The public can report illegal fireworks to the Bakersfield Fire Department through midnight, Wednesday, July 6 using any of these methods: • Online through our special web portal • Via email at firework@bakersfieldfire.us • Or by calling 661-326-3473 on July 1, 2 and 5 from 7 p.m. to midnight or 661- 868-6070 from 8 p.m. to midnight on July 3 & 4 only. General Information July 1, 2022 Page 2 Only fireworks that carry the “safe and sane” designation from the California State Fire Marshal are permitted to be used in the City. Illegal fireworks include anything that flies in the air or explodes. Anyone found using an illegal firework faces a fine of $1,000 per incident. During the holiday weekend last year, the Bakersfield Fire Department responded to 2,533 fireworks-related calls and issued $86,000 in fines. Notable Items  The $4.01 million Citywide Playground Rehabilitation Project is now complete! The contractor finished updates at Solera Gardens Park (right & below) on June 24 and the playground area was re- opened to the public the same day. The project, which started in late October and included equipment upgrades at 11 City-maintained parks, is the latest example of what the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure can provide for our community. PSVS not only made it possible to take on such a large project, but also to complete it in less than eight months, far quicker than initial estimates of 12 to 15 months! The only park originally included in the project to receive playground updates is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. The upgrades there have been put on hold until the completion of the park’s re-imagining project, though the funds are already earmarked for when the time comes. Congratulations to all our hard-working staff involved in the Playground Rehab Project and we hope everyone enjoys these improvements! Congratulations to all our hard-working staff involved in the Playground Rehab Project and we hope everyone enjoys these improvements!  On Tuesday, June 21, representatives from the City Manager’s Office and the City’s Water Department, along with reps from the California Water Service, presented to members of the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, discussing the state’s banning of irrigation of “non-functional turf” in commercial, industrial and institutional sectors. The City and California Water Services (CalWater) discussed the impacts to local businesses, explaining what is considered “non-functional turf” and the roles local water purveyors will have, also answering questions of Chamber members. An emphasis was placed during the chamber meeting on the rebate programs available to replace lawn to garden programs (known as turf replacement). Additional outreach will be scheduled in the coming months with other business property management organizations to help communicate the State’s ban currently in place.  The City and Bakersfield Fire Department would like to congratulate Deputy Chief William Ballard (right) on his retirement after 33 years with BFD. Deputy Chief Ballard joined BFD in April of 1989, working his way up the ranks, earning a promotion to Deputy Chief in 2019. He was the first-ever certified strike team leader for Bakersfield Fire and also spearheaded the multi-year accreditation process through the Center for Public Safety Excellence.  The Bakersfield Fire Department continues to grow as 24 recruits have completed their training, going through graduation ceremonies Thursday night. The 24 recruits began their academy in February, going through rigorous training to earn the right to became a Bakersfield Firefighter. The newest firefighters are now ready to hit the ground running, helping BFD during the busy summer months. General Information July 1, 2022 Page 4  The Recreation & Parks Department’s Family Fun Night at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center on Friday, June 24 was a success. The first Family Fun Night of the year saw more than 520 people attend. Along with games, activities and water basketball, attendees were able to learn more about the Recreation & Parks Master Plan and take the survey. Two more Family Fun Nights are scheduled for July 29 and Aug. 5.  Our Recreation & Parks Department continues to replace aging equipment at our local parks while providing the community with more opportunities to stay active. This week crews removed old fitness equipment at Silver Creek Park and began the installation of new equipment. The complete installation process is expected to take 6-8 weeks. The area where the equipment is being installed has been closed off to the public. General Information July 1, 2022 Page 5  The latest issue of Splash Magazines (left) features a review of the Bakersfield Brewery Trail, along with some local dining and entertainment options. Visit Bakersfield’s Evangelina Medina worked with this writer to arrange interviews with Bakersfield craft brewers on the Bakersfield Brewery Trail, as well with some local travel partners. The writer sums up his time in Bakersfield this way: “You will not run out of things to do or places to visit while you are in Bakersfield.”  Visit Bakersfield is thrilled to announce the launch of our new website. As a destination, Visit Bakersfield aims to always find new ways to promote our unique city by giving a glimpse of the one- of-a-kind experiences that Bakersfield has to offer. The site features all things Bakersfield including local attractions, events, restaurants, things to do, and where to stay.
