Agenda Item Public Statements. -None. b. Non -Agenda Item Public Statements. -None. SUMMARY REPORT a. Adoption of the August 19, 2022, Youth Commission Minutes Motion to approve Minutes from August 19, 2022, meeting by Commissioner Bell, second by Commissioner Beardsley. Motion Passed unanimously. NEW BUSINESS a. Nomination and election of Youth Commission Chair and Co -Chair Commissioner Bell and Commissioner Resolme were nominated to serve as Chair for the 2022-2023 Youth Commission. Vote by ballot. Commissioner Bell was elected as Chair by a majority vote of six of seven eligible votes. Commissioner Resolme, Commissioner Kakarla, and Commissioner Batth were nominated for Co -Chair for the 2022-2023 Youth Commission. Vote by ballot. Commissioner Resolme was elected as Co -Chair by a majority vote of five of the seven eligible votes. b. Youth Commission annual project review and discussion. The Commissioners discussed several options for the Youth Commission project including: 4. New Business continued Partnering with JJ's Legacy to promote organ donation. Educating students on workforce and vocational training alternatives for students who do not pursue a college education. Promoting community opportunities of arts and sports programs for junior high school students. Providing students with resources regarding mental health and other challenges students encounter. Promoting driver safety for student drivers. S. STAFF COMMENTS Management Assistant Gutierrez reminded the Commissioners to notify him in advance if they are unable to attend a meeting. Attorney Villanueva informed the Commissioners of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving event taking place at River Walk park. 6. COMMISSION COMMENTS Commissioner Beardsley stated that there is a student leadership program available through JJ's Legacy, anyone who is interested can contact him. Chair Bell requested the meeting calendar to be brought back by staff at the next meeting to discuss moving the meeting to an earlier time. 7. TO: Bakersfield Youth Commission FROM: Nathan Gutierrez, Management Assistant CREATED BY: Nathan Gutierrez, Management Assistant DATE: 8/23/2022 WARD: SUBJECT: Discussion and vote to amend the FY2022-2023 Youth Commission meeting calendar STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends Youth Commission determination BACKGROUND: At the August 19, 2022 Special Youth Commission meeting, Commissioners voted to approve a 4:45 p.m. call to order time to accommodate the later dismissal times established by the Kern High School District for the 2022-2023 school year to allow everyone to arrive on time. At the August 22, 2022 Special Youth Commission meeting, Chair Emily Bell asked staff to bring the regular meeting calendar back to the Youth Commission to discuss and vote on an earlier meeting time. She advised all school sites are dismissed one hour earlier on Mondays as part of the new Kern High School District schedule and that it would be possible to hold regular Youth Commission meetings at an earlier time. Collaborating with JJ's Legacy to promote organ donation awareness, specifically focusing on the "Got The Dot" initiative, which educates students on organ, eye, and tissue donation as they become first-time licensed drivers. 2. Providing information on Workforce & Education Training to students who may be considering other options besides traditional higher education. Collaboration opportunities with the Kern High School District, Kern Community College District, the B3K Initiative, and Employers' Training Resource could provide resources and information on middle skills training and employment opportunities within local in -demand industry sectors. 3. Educating local youth in elementary school and junior high about extracurricular activities including sports, art, community service, and other interactive events in the city. 4. Provide information and educate on the importance of driver safety as local teens, who may be first-time licensed drivers, return to school. 5. Educate parents and students on parent and student Rights in the education system. �dact5
