The Centennial Corridor Project to connect Highway 58 to
Interstate 5 continues to make progress.
The City's Technology Services Department recently completed a
new yover video (right) on the project in cooperation with the
Thomas Roads Improvement Program (TRIP).
The video shows the project starting from the Highway 99 and Ming
Avenue interchange, heading north along the 99 and nishing over
the Truxtun off-ramp to the Westside Parkway.
The Centennial Corridor is expected to be open to traf c in mid-
2023.
Sumner Station demo and cleanup
The debris left following the demolition of the east building near the
Historic Sumner Rail Station property has been removed. Crews
contracted by Union Paci c Railroad have removed other buildings

and accessory structures at and near the property earlier this
summer as well. The depot itself remains leased to the City under an
agreement the City Council unanimously approved in June 2021.
The City expects the removal of these structures will bene t any
potential new owners interested in redeveloping the site in the
future.

Weekend pop-up trash drop-off events
The City of Bakers eld's Solid Waste Division is hosting a pair of
pop-up large item drop-off events on Saturday, October 8 from 8
a.m. to noon at the Kaiser Permanente Sports Village (9001 Ashe
Road) and at 4200 Panorama Drive.

These events are part of Bakers eld’s Clean City Initiative and are
funded by the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure, also
known as Measure N.
So far this year, these events have collected more than 148,000
pounds of trash, 6,640 pounds of recycling, 524 mattresses, 135
tires, and nearly 1,000 e-waste items.

An annual community-building campaign promoting police-
community partnerships, National Night Out also helps build
neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more
caring places to live.

The event also enhances the relationship between neighbors and law
enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community and it
provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together
under positive circumstances.
Coffee with a Cop
Of cers from the Bakers eld Police Department also met with
members of the public at Five o Two Cafe on F Street on Wednesday,
Oct. 5 for National Coffee with a Cop Day!

Low-cost pet vaccine & licensing clinics
Animal Control Field Services’ low-cost drive-through vaccination
clinic is set for 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 8 at Silver
Centennial Park (450 Montclair Street). Pet owners are asked to take
their dogs out of the vehicle so staff can safely vaccinate them, and
dogs must remain on a leash during the clinic. Dogs can also be
microchipped free of charge with the purchase of a license.

Campus Park North tness equipment upgrade
The Recreation & Parks Department has re-opened the tness areas
at Campus Park North (3700 Park View Drive) after completing
upgrades to the equipment there. This $100,000 improvement
project was made possible thanks to the Public Safety & Vital
Services (PSVS) Measure, also known as Measure N. Work started
on September 20 and it was expected to take up to a month and a
half to complete, but as you can see, we are done well ahead of that
schedule!

General Plan Update virtual
workshop
The City's Development Services
Department continues to move forward
with the General Plan Update (GPU)
process.
As part of the City’s Housing Element
Update, a Housing Opportunities virtual
workshop will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Registration online is
required to participate. Participats will have the opportunity to give
input to help identify where future housing should be located over
the next eight years.

Bakers eld ranked among the top 20 "greenest cities"
in U.S.
The City of Bakers eld has been ranked
the 20th Greenest City in the U.S. out of
the country's 100 largest cities.
Finance website WalletHub compared the
nation's largest cities across "28 key 'green'
indicators" and found that Bakers eld is
among the best at promoting an
environmentally friendly lifestyle.
WalletHub ranked those 100 cities in four overall categories:
Environment, Transportation, Energy Sources, and Lifestyle & Policy.
Bakers eld scored well in Lifestyle & Policy (13th), Energy Sources
(19th) and Transportation (21st), receiving an overall score of 57.87.

That placed us right behind Riverside (58.63) and just ahead of San
Bernardino (57.43). The top scoring city was San Diego with a total
score of 70.19.

Metropolitan Bakers eld Habitat Conservation Plan
Trust Group recruitment
The Bakers eld City Council is currently recruiting for an individual
to serve a two-year term on the Metropolitan Bakers eld Habitat
Conservation Plan Trust Group, said term to expire October 2024.
The Trust Group assists in the implementation of a joint City of
Bakers eld/County of Kern conservation program which addresses
State and Federal Endangered Species Law.

Freeway Closure for westbound
Hwy 58 at Chester Avenue
Nighttime closures have been scheduled
for westbound State Route 58 at Chester
Avenue. The closures will take place on
October 4 through 7 from 10 p.m. until 5
a.m. The closures are needed for sign
installation. California Highway Patrol will be monitoring the
construction zone.
During these closures, all motorists will be detoured to exit and head
north at Chester Avenue, then west on Brundage Lane. At Wible
Road/Oak Street, northbound motorists will travel north on Oak
Street, west on California Avenue, then enter the northbound State
Route 99 on-ramp. Southbound motorists from Brundage Lane will
head south on Wible Road, west on Ming Avenue then enter the
southbound State Route 99 on-ramp.
Construction schedules may be changed without notice due to
unforeseen circumstances. The Thomas Roads Improvement
Program apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause the
traveling public.
