The Build-A-Bike afterschool program at the Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Community Center has returned after a two-year hiatus. The
program - which was rst introduced in 2007 - allows students to
take home a refurbished bike after working in the MLK Community
Center bike shop.

Students work for four days, about two hours each day, learning
basic bike maintenance, repairs and bike safety before earning their
own bike.

The program takes donations from the community and also utilizes
bikes from the Bakers eld Police Department, which will hand over
seized bikes. Any student wishing to take part in the program can
contact the MLK Community Center and be placed on a waiting list.

Once a student completes the program and is ready to ride off with
their bike, they are given a bike kit, which consists of a helmet, lock
and pump.

More than 230 vaccines given at low-cost clinic
Animal Control Field Services held its monthly low-cost drive-
through vaccination clinic on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Silver Centennial
Park. Pet owners brought 124 dogs to the park for 237 total
vaccinations and 73 licenses. Dogs can also be microchipped free of
charge with the purchase of a license.
Animal Control also gave 86 rabies vaccinations, 94 vaccinations for
distemper and 57 for Bordetella.
The next clinic is set for Saturday, Nov. 5 at Wilson Park (2300
Wilson Road).

Bakers eld is keeping busy!
Bakers eld will experience unusually high
impacts from events next week, based
upon new research from PredictHQ.
According to the October 2022 Event
Index, the week of Oct. 16 will be an
especially busy one in Bakers eld. In fact,
Bakers eld is among cities with the highest
Event Index scores in October.

Beale Park courts update underway
A renovation of the Beale Park basketball and tennis/pickleball
courts is underway! Work includes the complete removal and
replacement of the two concrete courts, replaced with new post
tension concrete slabs. The new courts will also include new colored
acrylic court surfacing and equipment hardware like those seen at
other recently updated locations. The tennis courts will also
incorporate pickleball courts.
Hot Rod Reunion is one reason Bakers eld will be among
the busiest cities for events the week of Oct. 16. Proto

This project is made possible thanks to the Public Safety & Vital
Services (PSVS) Measure, also known as Measure N and is expected
to be completed in about two months.

Academy informational workshop
The Bakers eld Fire Department took part
on Tuesday, Oct. 11 in an informational
workshop at Bakers eld College for
students interested in pursuing careers in
re ghting.
Brian Bowman, the Public Information
Of cer for the re department, spoke to
the students about how to put together a strong resume when
applying to the academy, preparing for the oral interview, as well as
taking the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), and where to nd
a free test prep course.

General Plan Update
Voting now open for GPU T-shirt design contest
The Development Services Department received more than two
dozen submissions for the General Plan Update's T-shirt design
contest and staff has now narrowed the eld to the top three designs
to be voted on by the public!
The designs that were selected by staff for the nal vote were
submitted by:

Tristan Pham

or by clicking here. Voting ends Monday, Oct. 31, 2022.
The winning design will be featured on T-shirts worn by City staff to
promote the General Plan Update, and the winning artist will receive
a $50 Visa Gift Card, a City RISE Swag Bag and two (2) T-shirts
featuring their design!
The runners up will each receive a City RISE Swag Bag and a T-shirt
with the winning design.

Housing Opportunities Workshop Open House
Open house workshops will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18 as part of the
City's Housing Element Update. The City will use the Housing
Element Update to identify where future housing should be located
over the next eight years.
Two open house events will be held on Tuesday: from 11:30 a.m. to 1
p.m., and from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Development Services Department
(1715 Chester Avenue) in the rst oor conference room.
Spanish translation will be available on request.

GPU Climate Action Plan community workshop
scheduled
City staff working on the General Plan Update will host a virtual
workshop on Bakers eld's rst Climate Action Plan at 6 p.m. on
Tuesday, Oct. 25. Participants can provide feedback to staff about
how to create a sustainable Bakers eld, brainstorming ideas and
prioritizing strategies to reduce emissions and more.

Closure planned on Zerker Road
Zerker Road between 7th Standard Road
and Snow Road will be closed for repaving
on Saturday, Oct. 15.
The closure is expected to begin at 1 a.m.
and last until 8 p.m. the same day.
Detours will be in place during the closure as follows:
Northbound drivers on Allen Road will be diverted east on Snow
Road to Calloway Drive, then north to westbound 7th Standard
Road.
Southbound drivers on Zerker Road will be diverted east on 7th
Standard to Calloway, then south to eastbound Snow Road.

The only access to Bailey Street will be from the north end at 7th
Standard Road.
Traf c delays are expected as a result of this work. Drivers are
advised to use alternate routes, or to allow for extra travel time
through the area and to use caution when doing so.
The City thanks the public for its patience and understanding during
the completion of these improvements.

inclement weather or other unforeseen conditions.
Freeway closure planned for westbound Hwy 58 to
southbound Hwy 99 connector and lane closures
planned on Hwy 99
A night closure has been scheduled for the westbound State Route
58 to southbound State Route 99 connector. This closure will take
place on October 16 from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. During this time
southbound State Route 99 will also have lane closures between
Stockdale Highway and Ming Avenue. The closure is needed for work
on pavement joints.
During the closure, westbound-to-southbound motorists will be
detoured to northbound State Route 99 to exit at California Avenue.
At California Avenue go west to enter the southbound State Route
99 on-ramp.
Construction schedules may be changed without notice due to
unforeseen circumstances. The Thomas Roads Improvement
Program apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause the
traveling public.
