City celebrates 66th Annual Teen Government Day
More than 80 local students from 21 area
high schools learned about Bakers eld's
government and the services we provide to
our thousands of residents every day
during the 66th Annual City of Bakers eld
Teen City Government Day on Wednesday,
Nov. 2.
The 84 students were assigned to various
City departments to learn about those
services, and they also provided valuable feedback about what they
feel are important needs in the community (gallery below).
16 local high school students joined the City Council for its
meeting on Nov. 2, 2022 as part of the 66th Annual Teen
City Government Day.

Following a morning spent "on-the-job" with City employees, the
students returned to City Hall before heading to Hodel’s Country
Dining for a luncheon in their honor, sponsored by the Bakers eld-
area Kiwanis Clubs.
Sixteen students were then invited to attend Wednesday evening's
City Council meeting, sitting on the dais with their Councilmember
or City staff counterparts (below).

Citywide Solar Project Phase 1 complete!
The City and ForeFront Power celebrated the completion of Phase 1
of a Citywide Solar Project that will save Bakers eld and its
taxpayers millions of dollars in energy costs.
A ribbon cutting for Phase 1 was held on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at the Park
at River Walk. Mayor Karen Goh, Vice Mayor Ken Weir (Ward 3),
Public Works Director Gregg Strakaluse, and Parks Superintendent
Keith Howell attended the event, along with Rachel McLaughlin,
Senior VP of Sales & Marketing with ForeFront Power and
representatives from several local legislators.

Phase 1 of the project is a 2 megawatt-DC solar energy portfolio
located at ve sites: the parking lot south of City Hall South, the
Bakers eld Police Department Headquarters parking lot, the
parking lot at The Park at River Walk (pictured), the parking lot at the
City Corporation Yard, and at Mesa Marin Sports Complex.
With an annual electrical output of 3.4 million kilowatt-hours, Phase
1 alone is expected to save the City and taxpayers nearly $9 million
in electricity costs over a 20-year period.

Under the terms of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the City
of Bakers eld, ForeFront Power developed, owns, and maintains the
City’s solar energy portfolio. ForeFront Power charges the City a
xed, below-market rate for electricity, which is locked in for the 20-
year duration of the agreement. And ForeFront Power will continue
to operate and maintain the system at no cost to the City.

The City’s energy demands are high and demands grow each year.
With rates increasing as well, City staff has explored energy
ef ciency projects in recent years to reduce its reliance on costly
energy from PG&E. This project will greatly reduce the cost of
energy for Bakers eld, freeing up valuable General Fund dollars for
other City Council priorities.
