BAKERSFIELD MI~NICIPAL CODE B~.ATIN~ TO
SIGNS.
BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield
as follows:
SECTION 1.
Subsection O. is hereby amended to Section 17.60.070 of
the Bakersfield Municipal Code to read as follows:
17.60.070 General prohibitions and restrictions.
O. Any commercial sign which does not identify or
advertise the occupant of a building, lot or premises, or relate
to any merchandise or to any business or other activity available
or being conducted at the building, lot or premises where the sign
is located, except subdivision directional signs, is prohibited;
provided, however, in each instance and under the same conditions
under which Chapter 17.60 permits any sign, a sign containing an
ideological, political or other non-commercial message and
constructed to the same physical dimensions and character shall be
permitted.
SECTION 2.
Subsection N. of Section 17.60.080 of the
Municipal Code is hereby amended to read as follows:
17.60.080 Specific prohibitions.
The following signs, in addition to other signs
prohibited in this chapter, are specifically prohibited:
N. Notwithstanding any provision to the contrary
contained in this chapter, no freestanding sign (other than
Bakersfield
monument signs and directional signs, as defined in Section
17.60.030) and no outdoor advertising signs shall be permitted on
property within the area described and circumscribed as follows:
1. Beginning at the intersection of the southerly line
of the primary floodplain, as designated in the Kern River Plan,
and the westerly right-of-way line to the southerly right-of-way
line of the Carrier Canal then westerly to the easterly right-of-
way line of the Stine Canal, then southerly along said right-of-
way line of the Santa Fe Railroad, then westerly along said line
to the westerly right-of-way line of the Carrier Canal, then
westerly along said line to the easterly right-of-way line of
Coffee Road, then northerly along said line to the southerly line
of the primary floodplain, then easterly along said line to the
point of beginning.
2. Along oI within one thousand (1,000) feet of Highway
178 east of Oswell Street.
3. Along or within one thousand (1,000) feet of Alfred
Harrell Highway.
4. Along or within one thousand (1,000) feet of
Stockdale Highway west of New Stine Road.
5. Along or within one thousand (1,000) feet of
Panorama Drive.
SECTION 3.
Subsection A.2. of Section 17.60.160 of the Bakersfield
Municipal Code is hereby amended to read as follows:
17.60.160 Permitted in C-2 district.
A. The following signs are permitted in the C-2
district:
2. Outdoor advertising signs not exceeding three
hundred square feet in area, excluding cut-outs or extensions not
exceeding thirty square feet in area, and not exceeding thirty-
ftve feet in height, except that:
a. Such signs shall be at least one thousand feet
from any other outdoor advertising sign, and
b. Such signs shall not project over public
property or any public right-of-way, and

c. Where such sign has two faces back-to-back
which faces are at no point more than two feet apart, the two
faces of the signs shall be substantially equal in size, and
d. Such signs shall be at least three hundred feet
from any residentially zoned property, and
e. Such signs shall not project over, or be placed
upon, any building or structure, and
f. Such signs shall be at least one hundred feet
from all freestanding signs located on the same parcel, and at
least twenty-five feet from an adjoining interior lot line.
SECTION 4.
Subsection A.2. of Section 17.60.170 of the Bakersfield
Municipal Code is hereby amended as follows:
17.60.170 Permitted in M-1 and M-2 districts.
A. The following signs are permitted in the M-1 and
M-2 districts:
2. Outdoor advertising signs not exceeding three
hundred square feet in area, excluding cut-outs or extensions not
exceeding thirty square feet in area, and not exceeding thirty-
five feet in height, except that:
a. Such signs shall be at least one thousand feet
from any other outdoor advertising sign, and
b. Such signs shall not project over public
property or any public right-of-way, and
c. Where such sign has two faces back-to-back
which faces are at no point more than two feet apart, the two
faces of the signs shall be substantially equal in size, and

SECTION 5.
Subsection 48. is hereby added to Section 17.60.030 of
the Bakersfield Municipal Code to read as follows:
17.60.030 Definitions.
For the purposes of this chapter, the following words
and phrases shall have the meaning respectively ascribed to them
by this section:
48. "Commercial sign" means a sign which advertises a
product or service for profit or for a business purpose.
SECTION 6.
This ordinance shall be posted in accordance with the
City Charter provisions and shall become effective thirty (30)
days from and after the date of its passage.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Ordinance was passed
and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a regular
