Adoption of minutes of the November 7, 2022, Special Youth Commission meeting. Motion to approve the minutes from the November 7, 2022 Special Meeting by Commissioner Tarango and seconded by Commissioner Webster. Motion passed unanimously. 4. NEW BUSINESS a. Discussion and planning the annual Youth Commission project including the collaboration with the Applecore Project Inc, a donation drive to collect hygiene items, snacks, and school supplies to support families and teens living in local motels. The Commissioners discussed what types of items should be donated. Commissioner Pursel suggested school supplies. Regarding advertising, Communications Coordinator Galvan remined the Commissioners of the resources that are available to them through the city. He suggested creating a flyer that the Commissioners could post on social media and at their high schools. Bakersfield, California November 28, 2022, Page 2 Management Assistant Gutierrez informed any type of advertising would need to be approved by the city before use. The Commissioners discussed the Farmer's Market logistics including the month(s) to host a booth, how many weekends, and how to schedule manning the booth. Management Assistant Gutierrez suggested inviting the farmers market manager to a commission meeting. Commissioner Pursel will extend the invitation. Commissioner Bell brought up the possibility of holding one more project this year. 5. STAFF COMMENTS Management Assistant Gutierrez verified which student would be attending the Council meeting on December 14 to give the Pledge of Allegiance. He announced that Commissioner Garcia submitted her resignation. Commissioner Tarango wi'l replace Commissioner Garcia as a regular member of the commission, and that will leave a seat open for an alternate for Ward 1. COMMISSION COMMENTS Commissioner Bell agreed that the details need to be worked out before moving to another project. Commissioner Bell asked Management Assistant Gutierrez to look into the possibility of accepting cash in lieu of actual supplies. BACKGROUND: At the November 7, 2022 special Youth Commission meeting, the Youth Commission voted to collaborate With the Apple Core Project Inc. to include a donation drive to collect hygiene items, snacks, and school supplies to support families and teens living in local motels as their annual project. There will be multiple opportunities for Youth Commissioners to attend and set up a booth at the Haggin Oaks Farmers Market in the Kaiser Permanente lot In southwest Bakersfield to collect donation items and provide information to attendees regarding the plight of local teens and their families living in motels who need additional assistance to afford school supplies and other basic needs.
