Notable items
Three Councilmembers sworn into of ce; valediction
held for Councilmember Parlier
Three City Councilmembers were sworn into of ce at the Council's
nal meeting in 2022 on Wednesday, Dec. 14, including Manpreet
Kaur (Ward 7), the rst Sikh Punjabi woman to be elected to serve on
the Bakers eld City Council.
In addition to Kaur (Ward 7), Eric Arias (Ward 1) and Bob Smith
(Ward 4) also took the oath of of ce having been re-elected to their
seats this past November.
Ward 3 Councilmember Ken Weir was unable to attend the meeting
and will take the oath of of ce at a later date after he secured re-
election.
Kaur is a rst-timer on the Council, succeeding Chris Parlier, who
served Ward 7 for eight years. Parlier announced over the summer
he would not seek re-election to his seat.
Outgoing Councilmember Parlier was honored prior to the Council
installation with a valediction ceremony recognizing his
accomplishments on the Council and his service to Ward 7.
Parlier received from the Public Works Department a framed photo
from Naples, Fla., his hometown. In addition, he was presented with a

reman's helmet from the Bakers eld Fire Department and a police
motorcycle helmet from the Bakers eld Police Department. During
his time on the Council, Parlier had pushed to bring the police
motorcycle division back to the department.

Stockdale River Ranch Multi-Use Trail now open to the
public
Earlier this year the City, along with Bolthouse Properties, held a
groundbreaking for a new multi-use trail, which provides access
between the new Stockdale River Ranch housing development and
the existing Kern River Bike Path.
The trail is now fully open and ready for the public to enjoy.

The 2.5-mile stretch of trail includes a 100-foot-long, 12-foot-wide
steel truss bridge over the Cross Valley Canal.
The project was paid for using $1.1 million in federal Congestion
Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program funds (88.53%)
and local Gas Tax and Utilities Surcharge funds (11.47%).

Bakers eld Police Department presents annual staff
awards
The Bakers eld Police Department hosted its annual staff awards
Wednesday, Dec. 14 in the BPD auditorium.
Awards were presented to the Civilian Employee of the Year,
Dispatcher of the Year, Detective of the Year and Of cer of the Year:

Also honored at the awards ceremony were of cers who responded
to an emergency near the Bakers eld Police Academy on California
Avenue on Dec. 2.
That morning contractors had been performing work on a nearby oil
well that experienced a "blowout," rattling the academy building
Bakers eld Police Department Physical Training instructors leapt
into action, assisting two injured workers - including applying

tourniquets to the most severely injured worker's legs - until the
Bakers eld Fire Department could arrive at the scene.
Bakers eld Fire personnel said the only reason the man had a chance
to survive was thanks to the quick actions of the of cers listed below
and pictured at right.

Maintenance begins on Mill Creek Canal
This week the City's Water Resources Department began its annual
maintenance of the Mill Creek Canal.
Crews began draining the canal on Monday, Dec. 12, bringing water
levels down to allow for its proper cleaning.
Water levels are tentatively scheduled to return to normal the rst
week of January, 2023.

World War II Veterans Memorial dedication honors
'Greatest Generation'
More than a thousand people were on hand Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022
for the dedication ceremony of the World War II Veterans Memorial
at Jastro Park.
The memorial is the rst in Kern County to honor local members of
our military who served and gave their lives during World War II.

Dignitaries and even local veterans who served during WWII were
on hand for the ceremony.
On Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2022, the City Council approved an
agreement to take over maintenance of the memorial.
Applications reopened for City Hall Fellowship Program
The inaugural class of the City Hall Fellowship Program will soon be
expanding.

Thanks to the City's partnerships with
California Volunteers and the Kern
Community Foundation, we will be
reopening the Fellowship application to
expand the current class.
Applications will be accepted through
Friday, Jan. 6.

application can be found on the Kern
Community Foundation's website.
Pop-up trash drop-off events
collect nearly 225,000 pounds of
trash in 2022
The City of Bakers eld's Solid Waste
Division held its nal pop-up large item
drop-off events of 2022 at Kaiser Permanente Sports Village and the
Bakers eld Municipal Airport on Saturday, Dec. 10, collecting more
than 9,400 pounds of trash between the two locations.
In addition, 99 mattresses were dropped at the events, along with
1,400 pounds of recycling.

These events are part of Bakers eld's Clean City Initiative and are
only possible thanks to funding from the Public Safety & Vital
Services (PSVS) Measure, also known as Measure N.
For the year, the City held 24 pop-up events, rotating locations
throughout the City to allow access to as many residents as possible.
At those events this year the City served nearly 2,300 vehicles and
collected:
224,350 pounds of trash
5,430 pounds of recycling
164 tires
759 mattresses

Holiday Grease Collection underway
The City of Bakers eld’s annual Holiday
Grease Collection event returns for the
2022-23 holiday season, offering a safe
disposal option for cooking oil and grease
for City residents.
Disposing of used cooking oil and grease
down residential drains can result in clogged pipes and other
damage, causing backups. Instead, residents can stop by either of the

City’s Holiday Grease Collection locations and dispose of used oil
and grease in a safe and environmentally friendly way.
Residents are asked to collect their used cooking oil and grease in
sealed containers before dropping it off at the locations. There is no
charge to dispose of used cooking oil and grease during the event.
The 2022 Holiday Grease Collection event ends Friday, Jan. 6, 2023.
Cooking oil and grease drop-off locations:
City of Bakers eld Wastewater Treatment Plant 3 (6901
McCutchen Road)
North of the River Sanitary District main of ce (204 Universe
Avenue)
Residents may drop off their used cooking oil and grease at those
locations from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, Monday through Friday.
The event is closed on Dec. 26, 2022 and Jan. 2, 2023.
For more information, residents should contact the Wastewater
Division at 661-326-3249.
