1.0 INTRODUCTION
This report documents underground storage tank (UST) system removal and replacement activities conducted at
7-Eleven Store No. 32376 located at 9600 Brimhall Road in Bakersfield, California (Figure 1). These services were
conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Bakersfield Fire Department (BFD). Stantec Consulting
Services Inc. (Stantec) conducted soil sampling and observed tank removal activities. RD Builders (RDB) was
subcontracted by 7-Eleven, Inc. (7-Eleven) to conduct the UST removal and replacement activities.
1.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF SERVICES
Stantec observed the removal of two existing USTs, dispenser islands, and product piping. Stantec collected soil
samples to assess subsurface conditions beneath the former UST area, dispenser islands, and product piping.
Stantec’s scope of services consisted of the following tasks:
Preparation of a site-specific Health and Safety Plan;
Observation of the UST removal activities;
Collection of soil samples beneath the dispenser islands and product piping, and from the UST excavation at
the direction of the BFD specialist;
Coordination of laboratory analysis of soil samples collected; and
Preparation of this report documenting the UST removal activities.
1.2 BACKGROUND
No previous environmental work has been conducted at the site.

2.0 FACILITY DESCRIPTION
2.1 SITE LOCATION
The site is located at the northeast corner of Brimhall Road and Calloway Drive in Bakersfield, Kern County,
California (Figure 1). The property is bounded to the south by Brimhall Road, to the north and east by a commercial
shopping center and to the west by Calloway Drive. The site is located in a mixed residential and commercial area.
2.2 SITE DESCRIPTION
The site is an operating 7-Eleven convenience store and gasoline station (Figure 2). Two 10,000-gallon double-
walled steel USTs were located in the central portion of the property. Six dispensers were located south of the USTs
and convenience store building. The UST, dispensers, and parking area are paved with concrete the rest of the site
is paved with asphalt. Two new 20,000-gallon double-walled fiberglass USTs were installed in an expanded tank
excavation where the previous tanks were on the property.

3.0 FIELD ACTIVITIES
3.1 UST REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT ACTIVITIES
On November 10, 2022, Stantec observed the removal of two 10,000-gallon double-walled steel USTs at the site.
The USTs were triple rinsed on site and were approved for removal by the BFD. The tanks were transported to SA
Recycling in Anaheim, California for destruction and disposal. The rinsate manifest and disposal documentation for
the USTs are provided in Appendix A.
On November 16, 2022, RD Builders installed two new USTs: one chambered 20,000-gallon double-walled fiberglass
UST, and one standard 20,000-gallon double-walled fiberglass UST. The new USTs were installed in an expanded
tank excavation.
The UST overburden soil was stockpiled during the UST removal activities. On November 11, 14, and 22, 2022,
approximately 740 cubic yards of clean soil were transported to Kootstra Dairy in Bakersfield, California for disposal.
Non-hazardous bills of lading and waste manifests are included in Appendix B.
3.2 SOIL SAMPLING ACTIVITIES
On November 10, 2022, Stantec personnel collected thirty soil samples under the direction of the BFD. Soil samples
were obtained at approximately two and six feet beneath the former dispenser islands and product piping. Soil
samples were collected near each end of each UST at depths of two and six feet below the bottom of the tanks. The
soil samples beneath the dispensers and product piping and the samples from the excavation were collected using a
hand auger or the excavator bucket. The soil samples were placed in clean laboratory supplied glass jars. Each jar
was completely filled to minimize headspace and sealed with a Teflon lined screw cap. Each sample was labeled
and placed in a chilled cooler.
3.3 ANALYTICAL METHODS
The soil samples were delivered under chain-of-custody to Pace Analytical National (Pace), a California state-
certified laboratory located in Mount Juliet, Tennessee. Soil samples collected beneath the dispenser islands,
product piping, and from the UST excavation were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons – gasoline range
organics (TPH-GRO) by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Test Method 8015. The samples were also
analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes (collectively BTEX), methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE),
tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME), tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether (DIPE), and ethyl-tert-butyl ether (ETBE) by
EPA Test Method 8260B.

4.0 ANALYTICAL RESULTS
4.1 SOIL SAMPLE ANALYTICAL RESULTS
Benzene was detected in soil sample D1-2 at a concentration of 0.00941 milligram per kilogram (mg/kg). Benzene
was not detected in the remaining 29 soil samples collected above laboratory reporting limits (LRLs).
TBA was detected in soil samples P1-2, P1-6, P2-2, P2-6, P3-2 and T2-W 2 at concentrations ranging from 0.00505
mg/kg in T2-W 2 to 0.00792 mg/kg in P3-2. TBA was also detected in the method blank associated with soil samples
P1-2, P1-6, P2-2, P2-6, and P3-2. TBA was not detected in the remaining 24 soil samples collected above LRLs.
TPH-GRO, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes, TAME, DIPE, ETBE, and MTBE were not detected in any of the 30
soil samples analyzed above their respective LRLs.
Soil sample analytical results are summarized in Table 1. Complete laboratory results and chain-of-custody
documentation for soil samples are included in Appendix C.

5.0 SUMMARY
On November 10, 2022, Stantec observed the removal of two 10,000-gallon double-walled steel USTs from the site.
Thirty soil samples were collected beneath the dispensers and product piping, and from the UST excavation.
Benzene was detected in soil sample D1-2 at a concentration of 0.00941 mg/kg. TBA was detected in soil samples
P1-2, P1-6, P2-2, P2-6, P3-2, and T2-W 2 at concentrations ranging from 0.00505 mg/kg in T2-W 2 to 0.00792 mg/kg
in P3-2. TBA was detected in the method blank associated with P1-2, P1-6, P2-2, P2-6, and P3-2. TPH-GRO,
toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes, TAME, DIPE, ETBE, and MTBE were not detected in any of the 30 soil samples
analyzed above their respective LRLs.
