The City of Bakers eld celebrated its 125th year of incorporation as
a municipality, marking January 11 as its "birthday" of sorts.
The City's new Board of Trustees began governing on that date in
1898, a week after a special election was held in which nearly 400
residents voted in favor of incorporation for a second time, with just
146 votes against.
Yes, Bakers eld has incorporated twice, the second time for good.
The rst incorporation was approved in 1873, but just three years
later voters decided to dis-incorporate.
In 1898, the City's population was around 4,000, spread over about
seven square miles.
Today, Bakers eld is home to 408,865 people - according to the
latest report from the California Department of Finance - making it
the ninth-largest City in California. The City has also grown

BLNC reaches 200 permanent housing placements!
The City's Brundage Lane Navigation
Center (BLNC) reached an important
milestone this week: 200 permanent
housing placements of formerly homeless
individuals! That total is since the BLNC
opened in 2020, just more than two years
ago.
"Every housing placement is
commemorated with a small parade down
our main hallway, accompanied by bells and
cheers," said Theo Dues, Kern County
Regional Manager for Mercy House, the
contracted operator of the BLNC. "It's
always energetic and exciting. But today,
that bell rang louder than it ever has and
there was an incomparable joy and energy in the air!"
The BLNC is also in the midst of a $5 million, 119-bed expansion
project that will bring the facility's capacity to 269, as well as
increase its pet capacity from 15 to 50. The expansion also includes a
new recuperative dorm space, additional parking, and more space for
additional staff.
"Thank you to the City for the strong support that made this moment
possible. Thank you to Mercy House for the guidance and vision to
get us here. Thank you to every BLNC staff member, whose tireless
work and devotion are changing the lives of our guests," Dues added.

multiple water rescues. In one neighborhood they rescued more than
50 people and helped take them to safety.
The six-person Type 2 Swift Water Rescue Team has been deployed
since Jan. 4 and the department has been in contact with crew
members who are reporting a very long, but successful day helping
our neighbors up north. The team does not have an anticipated
return date as there is still a series of storms lined up which could
