Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Requirements
General Requirements:
1. Electric vehicle charging equipment (EVCE) must be listed to the most recent edition of UL 2202,
Standard for Electric Vehicle Charging System Equipment, and/or UL 2594, Standard for Electric
Vehicle Supply Equipment, as applicable.
2. EVCE must be installed in accordance with all applicable provisions of Chapters 1 -4 and Article
625 of the 2022 California Electrical Code.
3. EVCE must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
4. Parking for spaces equipped with EVCE must comply with the requirements of California
Building Code Chapter 11B for accessibility. Permits are submitted through online portal.

One- & Two-Family Dwellings
A building permit is required for installation of level 1 or level 2 EVCE in one- and two-family dwelling
units. The permit is submitted online and is issued over the counter the next business day. All code and
manufacturers installation requirements are confirmed through a single final inspection.
Multi-family and Commercial Occupancies
A building permit is required for installation of level 1, level 2, or level 3 EVCE in these occupancies. A
plan review is required for permit issuance. The plan shall be submitted in accordance with City of
Bakersfield Building Department commercial project plan submittal requirements and include the
following:
1. A site plan that includes the location of all new equipment and the existing parking with
proposed new and/or revised parking spaces in accordance with Chapter 11B of the California
Building Code.
2. A single-line-diagram for the premises electrical system that includes the proposed EVCE.
3. Electrical panelboard schedule(s) for all new or affected electrical panelboards.
4. Electrical load calculations in accordance with CEC Articles 220 and 625.
5. Structural anchorage detail for all equipment.
6. Manufacturer’s data sheets for all proposed equipment.
