Hundreds packed the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center
on Monday, Jan. 16 to honor the community center's namesake.
The annual celebration at the MLK Community Center is one of the
most popular events in Bakers eld that pays homage to the life and
legacy of Dr. King.
Bishop Broderick A. Huggins was the keynote speaker, helping
deliver the event's theme of "It Starts with Me: Cultivating a Beloved
Community Mindset to Transform Unjust Systems." During his 39
years of pastoral leadership, Huggins has traveled the country and
abroad, serving as a pastor at several churches.

In total, 10,680 pounds of trash were dropped off by 333 resident
vehicles. Not only that, but 110 mattresses were disposed of, 1,460
pounds of recycling and more than 9,000 pounds of metal were

Park Rangers program kick-off event
The City's Recreation & Parks Department of cially celebrated the
kick-off of the new Park Ranger program in Bakers eld, recognizing
the 18 new Park Rangers and staff associated with the program.
They are already having an impact on our parks and facilities,
deterring unwanted activity, providing resources and safety to park
visitors and even helping the homeless get in touch with much-
needed services.

Darin Budak and Park Ranger Supervisor Michael Dobbs all spoke
about the importance of the program in our efforts to protect the

The program was unanimously approved by the City Council in
March 2022, with the team fully-staffed by December. It is made
possible thanks to funding from the Public Safety & Vital Services
(PSVS) Measure, also known as Measure N.
Members of the public and others are already telling the City how
much cleaner and more welcoming the parks have been since the
Park Rangers have been active, a great message to hear!

Town Kern is one of the city's targeted
areas for needed investment, including
investing ARPA funds for a three-tiered
safety program approach (lights/cameras,
site hardening, security support for a formal business improvement
district) and infrastructure improvements. The Bakers eld Police
Department shared its enhanced Impact Team (gang response),
mental health co-response model, success with the Flock camera
system and opportunities to fold business security cameras into the
BPD camera network.
