Notable Items
City earns honors at Kern COG Regional Awards
ceremony
The Kern Council of Governments hosted
its annual Regional Awards on Thursday,
Feb. 2 and the City of Bakers eld received
a handful of honors.
The City's Recreation & Parks Department
took home the Regional Award of Merit for
Local Government for its Playground
Rehabilitation Project, which was funded by the Public Safety & Vital
Services (PSVS) Measure, also known as Measure N. Department
director Rick Anthony and Parks Construction and Facilities Planner
Fidel Gonzalez were there to accept the award.

The City, the Bakers eld Police
Department and Kern County Behavioral
Health and Recovery were also given the
Richard A. Maxwell Regional Award of
Merit for Public Safety for the mental
health responder pilot program which
teamed BRHS mental health clinicians with
police dispatchers.
City at CSUB spring career expo
Looking for more talent to join the City, representatives from Human
Resources and the Bakers eld Police Department participated in
California State University Bakers eld's Spring Career Expo on
Thursday, March 3.
Reps from HR had the opportunity to speak with students and job
seekers interested in pursuing an array of careers at the City.
The City will continue recruiting efforts later this month, as Human
Resources reps are scheduled to participate in job fairs at Mechanics
Bank Arena on March 15 and at Centennial High School on March
17.

City replaces stretch of Rosedale Highway medians
with xeriscaping
Continuing efforts to conserve water, the City's Recreation & Parks
Department has kicked off a pilot program to replace landscaping on
medians with xeriscaping.
The Recreation & Parks Department identi ed a stretch of medians
on Rosedale Highway between Coffee Road and Calloway Drive to
use for its pilot program, eliminating standard landscaping and
reducing irrigation needs in favor of drought-tolerant plants.
The roughly 42,000-square-feet of median project to save one
million gallons of water annually.

Adaptive basketball program returns for Rec. & Parks
For the rst time in three years, the City's
Recreation & Parks Department was able
to run its adaptive basketball program,
concluding this week at the Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. Community Center.
The program went on hiatus in February
2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but returned Jan. 26, 2023
with its nal game this season played March 2, 2023.

Clients from As One, Inc., Kern Adult Program and PathPoint
participated in the program, playing games every Thursday.
Rec. & Parks will continue its adaptive programming in the spring,
hosting a softball league, which is scheduled to begin in April.
Good Vibration's March Meet returns to Bakers eld
It will be another busy weekend with the
return of the legendary Good Vibration’s
March Meet.
Each year, visitors from around the world
descend upon Famoso Dragstrip the rst
weekend of March, and 2023 is not
expected to be any different. The rst
March Meet was held at Famoso in 1959
and helped establish the edgling National Hot Rod Association’s
(NHRA) legitimacy.
Today, Famoso is one of the reasons Bakers eld is known as the
Racing Capital of California.
According to Visit Bakers eld, this will be the third big event in the
past three weeks to draw visitors and boost the local economy by
lling local hotel rooms and local restaurants.
Last weekend, the CIF high school wrestling championships were
underway, and the week before that was the World Ag Expo.

“Easy Train Excursions” includes the Amtrak route from Sacramento-
Bakers eld, encouraging readers to take the train to Bakers eld to
hike the Kern River Canyon.

CIF State Wrestling Championship at Mechanics Bank
Arena sees attendance increase
By all accounts, the CIF State Boys and Girls State Wrestling
Championships at Mechanics Bank Arena were a success.
The three-day event was held at the arena Feb. 23-25, drawing
hundreds of wrestlers and thousands of fans from throughout
California.
Brian Seymour, Associate Executive Director of CIF said, “As usual,
everything was done at a championship level by all and it is our hope
that the visiting teams and fans of wrestling had a great experience
as well.”
According to ASM, the number of people passing through the
turnstiles was up more than 27% over last year.
In 2022, Bakers eld won the rights to host this annual event through
2026. CIF wrestling will return to Mechanics Bank Arena the last
weekend of February 2024.

Participating in Read Across America is an annual tradition
Reading books from the library of Dr. Seuss was Dobbs' mission.
Answering questions, talking about the Rangers and all that he does
Helping out others, making parks safe and sometimes just because.
Those children who once were strangers are now some great friends

BPD, Rec. & Parks launching exercise classes on
Saturdays
Anyone looking to get into shape can now do so with help from
members of the Bakers eld Police Department.
BPD and the Recreation & Parks Department announced its new
"Spring into Action" campaign, allowing members of the public to
workout with members of the police department.
The workouts will take place every Saturday from March 4 through
May 27 at different City parks.
The 90-minute workouts will run from 8-9:30 a.m.
The rst one is scheduled to take place at Greystone Park, 5709
Mountain Vista Drive.
