The City's Public Works Department has
been awarded nearly $1.5 million in state
Highway Safety Improvement Program
(HSIP) grant funds for four projects to
improve the safety for pedestrians,
bicyclists, students, and drivers.
Among the projects to be completed are:
New raised street medians at various
locations throughout the City ($807,030)
New radar feedback signs (example
pictured at right) installed at entrances of
eight different streets ($288,450)
Replacement of traf c signal backplates
with high-visibility re ective backplates
to improve safety at intersections ($198,540)
New ashing yellow beacons near existing crosswalks at Norris
Elementary School and Stiern Middle School to enhance crossing
visibility ($188,370)

More than 18,000 pounds of trash collected at March
pop-up events
The City of Bakers eld's Solid Waste
Division collected more than 18,000
pounds of trash and recycling at a pair of
pop-up large trash item drop-off events
held Saturday, March 11.
The pop-up events are part of Bakers eld's
Clean City Initiative and are made possible
thanks to funding from the Public Safety &
Vital Services Measure (PSVS), also known
as Measure N.
The March events were held at the Mesa Marin Sports Complex and
at 15050 Stockdale Highway near the end of the Westside Parkway.

Between the two locations, 18,530 pounds of trash and recycling
were collected from 358 visiting vehicles.
In addition to the trash and recycling, 102 mattresses were dropped
off, as well as 42 tires and more than 200 e-waste items.
The City has hosted these events monthly since January 2020 so the
public can get rid of items too large to t in their normal trash bins.
The next pop-up events are set for *Saturday, April 8 at the Kaiser
Permanente Sports Village and 4200 Panorama Drive.

A partnership between the City of Bakers eld and Bakers eld
College's welding department is proving to be mutually bene cial.

The City Council approved an agreement with BC in November that
would allow students in the welding program to create and install
custom iron fencing and enclosures at City-owned facilities to assist
with keeping City assets secure.

"It's a great opportunity for Bakers eld College and the City to work
together to, essentially, beautify Bakers eld," said Bakers eld
College professor Jeremy Staat. "And the great thing about it is
we’re actually going to be able to use our students to have them
invest in our community to kind of take ownership in the community."

Students recently completed a fencing project at Sumner Station in
Downtown Bakers eld, digging and measure holes for posts,
installing the fencing and painting it.

Bakers eld Marathon returns
The Bakers eld Marathon is set to be run on Sunday, March 26,
starting at 7 a.m.
The marathon will take runners through many of the City's most
historic landmarks, starting and nishing at the Kern County
Museum on Chester Avenue.

The event is also a Boston Marathon-
qualifying race, with runners from across
the U.S. and around the world expected to
participate.
The race is expected to have impacts on
traf c, so drivers should plan for possible
delays, or to avoid the areas where the race
will be run (see map at right).
Youth Commission wraps up
successful donation drive
A donation drive held by the City's Youth Commission proved
successful, with hundreds of dollars raised and hundreds of
donations received.
The Youth Commission teamed with The Apple Core Project to host
donation drives at the Haggin Oaks Farmers Market on March 12
and 19, where nearly $400 and 400 items were donated.
The Apple Core Project will now be able to distribute donations to
local students in need.
The donation drive served as the Youth Commission's annual project.

Traf c Advisories
Parts of Eastbound Westside
Parkway set for closure beginning
March 29
Nighttime closures have for all lanes of
Eastbound Westside Parkway between
Mohawk Street and Truxtun Avenue are
scheduled for March 29-30.
The closures will take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. for
installation of overhead signs.

During the closure, drivers will be detoured to exit at Mohawk, turn
right on Mohawk then turn left on Truxtun Avenue.
Reverse traf c control planned on Real Road
Real Road will be agged for one-way directional traf c between
Stockdale Highway and Elcia Drive from March 27-31 as
construction crews remove falsework. A single lane will remain open
with aggers directing traf c. This closure is scheduled from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m. each day and may include a maximum of ve minutes full
closure for the safe removal of steel beams.
Construction schedules may be changed without notice due to
unforeseen circumstances. The Thomas Roads Improvement
Program apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause the
traveling public.
