The City's Brundage Lane Navigation
Center continues to be a bastion of hope
for those experiencing homelessness.
During the month of March, 2023, Mercy
House Living Centers was able to place 27
individuals from the BLNC into permanent
housing.
That gure is a record for single-month placements through the
BLNC.
Since opening in October, 2020, the BLNC has placed 245 individuals
into permanent housing.
The single-month mark comes as the BLNC's new men's dorm
of cially opened, allowing for more individuals to receive wrap-
around services through the City's navigation center.
Recuperative care dorm of cially opens at BLNC
The new recuperative care dorm at the Brundage Lane Navigation
Center has now started taking patients.
The recuperative care dorm accepts unsheltered individuals from
local hospitals, who are ready for discharge, but have after-care
needs such as nursing wounds, broken bones and may need IV
treatments.

This new recuperative care dorm opens much needed hospital bed
space for the region and ensures a warm handoff of the individuals
into services and shelter.
The recuperative care dorm is operated by our friends at Kern
Medical and funded by Kern Health Systems.
Thanks to the City’s partnership with Kern Medical, Kern Behavioral
Health & Recovery Services and the Kern County Department of
Human Services, the 268-bed BLNC provides primary care, on-site
therapists and connections to bene ts.

Pop-up trash events planned for April 8
The City of Bakers eld's Solid Waste Division will host a pair of pop-
up large item drop-off events on Saturday, April 8 from 8 a.m. to

noon.
The events will be held in the parking lot of
the Kaiser Permanente Sports Village
(9001 Ashe Road) and 4200 Panorama
Drive.
These events are part of Bakers eld's
Clean City Initiative and are funded by the
Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS)
Measure, also known as Measure N.
The March events held at the Mesa Marin Sports Complex and at
15050 Stockdale Highway collected more than 18,000 pounds of
trash and recycling items, including 102 mattresses and 42 tires.
Nearly 360 vehicles came through the two locations.

The City's Recreation & Parks Department is continuing its efforts to
add more lifeguards for the upcoming 2023 summer season.

Following completion of the pre-assessment, individuals will need to
enroll in the upcoming Lifeguard Academy and apply online for the
lifeguard position. The next academy is set for April 22-23, 29-30.

position as a lifeguard, because it is a high level of responsibility, I
want everybody to know that we will always do our best to make you
feel safe and secure and be able to perform as needed," said

This week, from April 3-6, Rec. & Parks hosted a blended waterpark
lifeguard course at McMurtrey, helping individuals looking to join the
ranks learn much-needed skills.

More than 250 dogs vaccinated at low-cost clinic

The Bakers eld Animal Control team hosted a low-cost dog
vaccination clinic on Saturday, April 1 at Jastro Park and saw more
than 250 pets receive their shots.
A total of 257 vaccines were given to 137 dogs and 87 licenses were
purchased.
The next low-cost clinic is set for Beale Park (500 Oleander Avenue)
on Saturday, May 6. And if you want to check out where the clinics

Agencies throughout Kern County participate in City-
hosted grant management course
The City's Economic & Community Development Department
hosted a grant management course this week, on April 3-4, with

about 40 people from various agencies throughout Kern County
attending.
Individuals from the City were joined by staff from Bakers eld
College, California State University, Bakers eld, the cities of
California City, Delano and McFarland and Kern County Public
Health.
Ericka Harney, an instructor from Grant Writing USA, led the
session. This week's visit was her second with the City, following a
grant writing course in February.
Students wrap up spring break STEAM Camp at MLK
Community Center
Learning rsthand about reptiles, creating constellation viewers and
even making their own volcanoes, students kept busy during the
Recreation & Parks’ STEAM Camp at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Community Center this week during spring break.

Students had the opportunity to partake in science, technology,
engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) related activities.
Students planted owers, learned about marigolds and
petunias, had a reptile expo brought to the community center,
learned about astronomy and participated in team-building
exercises.
Some materials for activities were made possible thanks to
community donations.

Annual Send a Kid to Camp luncheon on Friday, April 21 at Outback

Proceeds from this event will send local
burn survivors (ages 5-16) to a special
week-long, residential summer camp. The
camp provides fun games, activities and
enables peer interaction, an important
aspect of burn recovery.

(cover seen below left). In an full-page article titled “Basques, Brews &
Buckaroos,” (below center) the focus is on the Bakers eld Sound,
Basque culture, the Bakers eld Museum Trail and the Bakers eld
Kern County Brewery Trail. Across from the article is a full page ad
from Visit Bakers eld (below right).

Nighttime closures set for SB Hwy
99 to Ming Ave off-ramp
Closures have been scheduled for the
southbound State Route 99 to Ming
Avenue off-ramp. This ramp closure will
take place nightly from Monday, April 10
through Thursday, April 15 for the release
of falsework. The closures will begin at 9 p.m. and end at 5 a.m.
During the closures, motorists can exit at the Stockdale Highway off-
ramp or White Lane off-ramp. California Highway Patrol will be
monitoring the construction zone.

unforeseen circumstances. The Thomas Roads Improvement
Program apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause the
traveling public.

Closures have been scheduled for the westbound State Route 58 to
southbound State Route 99 connector. These closures will take place
nightly from Monday, April 10 through Thursday, April 15 for the

a.m. California Highway Patrol will be monitoring the construction
zone.
During the closures, westbound motorists will be detoured to
northbound State Route 99. From State Route 99 exit and turn
left/west at California Avenue. Merge right to enter the southbound
State Route 99 on-ramp.

unforeseen circumstances. The Thomas Roads Improvement
Program apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause the
