City Summer Youth Jobs Program now accepting
applications
The Bakers eld Youth Jobs Program is now
accepting applications for its summer jobs.
The program is a partnership between the
Kern Community Foundation and the City
of Bakers eld to hire hundreds of students
from around the city in positions providing
public and community services.

Applications are open for three types of paid summer jobs – a City
Hall Summer Internship for high school students ages 16-18, a Parks
Mobile Recreation Internship for ages 16-30, and a Non-Pro t
Internship for those 18-30. All positions are paid and come with a
mentor and professional development workshops.
The City Hall Summer Internship provides local youth the
opportunity to work alongside City Departments on important
projects. Interns will shadow City employees and help with
administrative duties.
Funding comes from a $5.39 million dollar grant from California
Volunteers, Of ce of the Governor. Since launching in April of last
year, nearly 75 youths have participated in the Bakers eld Youth
Jobs Program.

Urban Greening Project awarded $1.4M in state grant
funding
A transformative Urban Greening Project in Southeast Bakers eld
has been awarded nearly $1.5 million in grant funding from the
California Natural Resources Agency.
The Citadel Urban Greening Project will bring more than 2,000 new
trees and plants, improved lighting, a natural shade canopy for

sidewalk users and reactivate the eld area
at a 4.13-acre sump near the corner of E.
Belle Terrace and Citadel Street.
“This grant is vitally important to our
efforts in improving this area and creating
new recreation opportunities for the
neighborhood,” Recreation & Parks
Director Rick Anthony said. “The area is
currently being used as a sump, and this
project will transform it into a more usable space for our residents to
enjoy while also helping reduce air pollution in the area.”

The City of Bakers eld and the Public
Works Department's efforts to address
homelessness were part of the cover story
in the April edition of the American Public
Works Association's "Reporter"
publication which is read nationally by
public works professionals.
Bakers eld's efforts are mentioned on page 72 in the article titled
"Compassion and innovation drive the role of public works in
addressing US unhoused crisis." Public Works Director Gregg
Strakaluse was quoted, explaining how the department transformed
the former Calcot of ces into the Brundage Lane Navigation Center
and later the recently completed expansion.

Bakers eld Police Dept. training obstacle course now
open at Yokuts Park
Future members of the Bakers eld Police Department will now have
a new training course to utilize as they prepare for a career in law
enforcement.

The City's Recreation & Parks Department, in coordination with
BPD, recently completed work on a new obstacle course at Yokuts
Park.
The course will allow academy cadets to practice on and prepare for
the POST agility testing at their convenience.
The training course consists of ve elements:
Obstacle course agility run
Body drag
Chain link fence climb
Solid fence climb
500-yard run
The Recreation & Parks Rapid Response Team initially built a wall,
fence, and horse obstacles at the park, in addition to running path
concrete markers. A permanent running path has also been created
as part of the project, which is funded by the Bakers eld Police Dept.

Bakers eld goes to Sacramento
A City of Bakers eld contingent of Mayor Karen Goh, Asst. City Manager Gary Hallen, Asst. to the City
Manager Anthony Valdez, and Admin. Analyst Juan Heredia attended the League of California Cities
City Leaders Summit on April 13 and 14 to meet with other leaders and advocate on the City's behalf.
12th Annual Send a Kid to Camp luncheon April 21
The Bakers eld Fire ghter’s Burn Foundation will host its 12th
Annual Send a Kid to Camp luncheon on Friday, April 21 at Outback
Steakhouse (5051 Stockdale Highway) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A $25
donation gets you lunch including an entrée (chicken or steak), a
drink, salad and a side. Not only that - you will get a serving of “Onion
Pedals” and service provided by your Bakers eld Fire ghters!
Proceeds from this event will send local burn survivors (ages 5-16) to
a special week-long, residential summer camp. The camp provides
fun games, activities and enables peer interaction, an important
aspect of burn recovery.

Nighttime closures planned on WB
Hwy 58 to SB Hwy 99 connector
Closures have been scheduled for the
westbound State Route 58 to southbound
State Route 99 connector. These closures
will take place nightly from Monday, April
17 through Thursday, April 20 for the
release of falsework. The closures will begin at 9 p.m. and end at 5
a.m. California Highway Patrol will be monitoring the construction
zone.

During the closures, westbound motorists will be detoured to
northbound State Route 99. From State Route 99 exit and turn
left/west at California Avenue. Merge right to enter the southbound
State Route 99 on-ramp.
Construction schedules may be changed without notice due to
unforeseen circumstances. The Thomas Roads Improvement
Program apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause the
traveling public.
Overnight closures planned for SB 99 to Ming Avenue
off-ramp
Closures have been scheduled for the southbound State Route 99 to
Ming Avenue off-ramp. This ramp closure will take place nightly from
Monday, April 17 through Thursday, April 20 for the release of
falsework. The closures will begin at 9 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. During
the closures, motorists can exit at the Stockdale Highway off-ramp or
White Lane off-ramp. California Highway Patrol will be monitoring
the construction zone.

the price for unreturned residential embedded multimedia terminal
adapters (D3 and newer models, wired and wireless) will be reduced
