a project that will save the City and its Domestic Water System
(DWS) customers water every year.
The U.S. Department of Interior recently announced that the City
will receive a $497,117 Water and Energy Ef ciency Grant (WEEG)
from the Bureau of Reclamation to replace 5,500 existing meters
with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters in a residential
area of more than 20,000 residents.
The new meters are expected to save customers 221 acre-feet of
water each year by providing real-time access to their own water use
data. Customers will also be able to set leak alerts as well as high-
usage alerts so they can make adjustments or plan for repairs to help
conservation efforts. The meters will reduce greenhouse gas
emissions by 4.3 metric tons of CO2 each year by cutting down
vehicle miles traveled and improving system ef ciency. In addition,
the new meters will improve City water conservation efforts and
increase the available water supply.
This pilot project will cover a 2.46-square mile area located between
Gosford Road and Stine Road and between Ming Avenue and White
Lane. The location was selected as most of the meters in the area are
at or near the end of their 20-year life cycle and are due to be
replaced.
The project is expected to cost $1,292,435, with the City covering
the balance and is expected to be completed by May 2025.
