Peace Of cer Memorial Week ceremonies
In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace
Of cers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls,
as National Police Week. On Thursday, May 18, the Bakers eld
Police Department held a ceremony honoring the lives and sacri ces
of BPD of cers who gave their lives in service to the department and
City of Bakers eld, with Chief Greg Terry speaking in their
memories.
Chief Terry and a contingent of Bakers eld Police Of cers and staff
also attended a ceremony held in the afternoon honoring all Kern
County Law Enforcement Of cers killed in the line of duty at the

Kern County Peace Of cers Memorial in front of the Superior
Courthouse on Truxtun Avenue. The BPD joined the Kern County
Sheriff's Of ce and California Highway Patrol for the ceremony.
Mayor Karen Goh, among other of cials, also spoke at the event and
the Bakers eld Fire Department attended, bringing a re engine and
American ag.
National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations
dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community.
Southeast Strong Fest at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park

The City hosted the Southeast Strong Fest at Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Park on Saturday, May 13, to help bring awareness to our
Transformative Climate Communities work.
The event offered an opportunity for the public to learn about TCC
and to tell our staff what projects they want to see here in
Bakers eld.

The Southeast community will be this grant's primary focus area for
Round 5 of the TCC grant.
At Southeast Strong Fest, community members got a chance to learn
about services the City provides - from Recreation & Parks and the
Park Rangers, to the Economic & Community Development
Department, and much more.

Grand Lakes Avenue gets new pedestrian safety
improvements
Pedestrian safety improvements continue throughout the City, with
the most recent example coming in Ward 5.
This week the Public Works Department's Streets Division
completed a new pavement marking project on Grand Lakes Avenue.
The 1.4-mile stretch from Ming Avenue to Coram Drive now features
eight-foot bike lanes, a six-foot buffer and narrower traf c lanes.
Traf c lanes went from 26-feet wide to 11-feet. Crews also added
double yellow, non-passing stripes.
Big City Mayors lobby Governor for homeless, housing
and youth support
Mayor Karen Goh, as part of the Big City Mayors coalition, met with
Gov. Gavin Newsom and leaders of the California State Legislature
(below) to discuss homelessness, housing, youth jobs and reform to
the state’s system of addressing mental health and substance abuse.

Cities shared that they have led the way in creating innovated
homelessness services, but continue to bear the nancial burden of
the state’s mental health, substance abuse and housing crisis.

The Recreation & Parks Department welcomed the Green eld
Walking Group to the Adopt-A-Park program this week!
The group of more than 30 volunteers was given Adopt-A-Park t-
shirts, of cial City of Bakers eld "grabbers" for picking up trash and
debris, and trash bags and gloves.
The Green eld Walking Group adopted Stiern Park where they will
complete monthly clean-ups starting May 16. Check out the video of
them receiving their gear!

BLNC hosts visit from National Alliance to End
Homelessness of cials
This week, the City of Bakers eld was
proud to host National Alliance to End
Homelessness CEO Ann Oliva and Senior
Policy Fellow Alex Visotzky at the City’s
award-winning Brundage Lane Navigation
Center. Theo Dues, the Kern County
Manager for BLNC shelter operator Mercy
House, gave the delegation a tour of the
facility, including the commercial-style
kitchen (at right) where three meals a day are prepared and where
residents can attend classes for a culinary certi cate and be placed in
local restaurants.
Kern Medical Vice President Natalee Garrett detailed the operations
of the BLNC's new recuperative care dorm (below), which is the rst
of its kind in the State of California.
Safety surfacing rehabilitation project completed at
Central Park

Children, young and old, will have a little more bounce to their steps
while utilizing the playground equipment at Central Park at Mill
Creek, 500 19th Street, thanks to a newly completed resurfacing
project.
The City's Recreation & Parks Department completed installation of
new safety resurfacing on Friday, May 19, about a week after
starting the project.
The nearly $100,000 project was made possible thanks to the Public
Safety & Vital Services Measure (Measure N).
Hometown Heroes Banner program ceremony set for
May 20
Join us Saturday, May 20 as we honor local members of the U.S.
armed forces at our Hometown Heroes Banner unveiling ceremony.
It begins at 10 a.m. at the Amtrak Station, 601 Truxtun Ave., behind
Visit Bakers eld and Beale Library.

Overnight southbound Ming
Avenue off-ramp closures
Nighttime closures have been scheduled
for the southbound State Route 99 to Ming
Avenue off-ramp. This ramp closure will
take place nightly from Sunday, May 21
through Thursday, May 25 for the release
of falsework.
The closures will begin at 9 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. During the
closures, motorists can exit at the Stockdale Highway off-ramp or
White Lane off-ramp. California Highway Patrol will be monitoring
the construction zone.
Nighttime closures planned on southbound Highway 99
Overnight closures have been scheduled for all lanes of southbound
State Route 99 between State Route 58 and Ming Avenue. The
closures will take place nightly from Sunday, May 21 through
Thursday, May 25 for the release of falsework.
The closures will begin at 11 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. California
Highway Patrol will be monitoring the construction zone.
During the closures, motorists will be detoured to exit at Stockdale
Highway. Turn left/east on Stockdale Highway, right/south on Wible
Road, right/west on Ming Avenue, then left to enter the southbound
State Route 99 on-ramp.

to southbound Highway 99 connector

Nighttime closures have been scheduled for the westbound State
Route 58 to southbound State Route 99 connector. These closures
will take place nightly from Sunday, May 21 through Thursday, May
25 for the release of falsework.
The closures will begin at 9 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. California Highway
Patrol will be monitoring the construction zone.
During the closures, westbound motorists will be detoured to exit at
Chester Avenue. Turn right/north on Chester Avenue, left/west on
Brundage Lane, left/south on Wible Road, right/west on Ming
Avenue, then left to enter the southbound State Route 99 on-ramp.
Reverse traf c control scheduled for Real Road
Real Road will be agged for one-way directional traf c between
Stockdale Highway and Elcia on Monday, May 15. A single lane will
remain open with aggers directing traf c. This closure is scheduled
from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for Cal Water utility relocations.
The City thanks the public for its patience and understanding during
the completion of these improvements.
Please note: Construction work may be postponed and rescheduled
without notice due to inclement weather and other unforeseen
conditions.
