4th of July Fireworks Show
The City of Bakers eld’s popular Independence Day celebration and
free reworks show will be held at The Park at River Walk on
Tuesday, July 4, 2023.
Attendees will be treated to live music performances by The 95’s and
The Habbits, as well as recorded music courtesy of KUZZ Radio at

the Dignity Health Amphitheatre starting
at 6 p.m. prior to the reworks.
Zambelli Fireworks will produce the
reworks show, which this year is
sponsored by Sunbelt Rentals and
Mechanics Bank Arena, Theater and
Convention Center.
The reworks show is scheduled to start
at 9:15 p.m. Simultaneous musical accompaniment for the show will
be provided by KUZZ.
Notable Items
Rec. & Parks holds Bathing Suit Drive
Looking to help those in need and also to keep individuals safe, the
City's Recreation & Parks Department held a bathing suit drive this
week at all four of the City-maintained swimming pools.
Individuals who donated swimsuit were given free admission into
City pools.
Recreation & Parks supervisor Katharine Dye said the donated
bathing suits will be given to individuals who are need of them or are
not wearing proper swim attire.

Dye said there are potentially safety
concerns with individuals not wearing
proper swimsuits, and also potential
hazards for the pools themselves.
The bathing suit drive had a been a staple
of the Recreation & Parks Department, but
was shut down due to the COVID-19
pandemic.
All four City pools now open for
summer season
The Recreation & Parks Department's
swimming pools are open for recreational
swim.
The pools at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
Jefferson and Silver Creek parks, along
with the McMurtrey Aquatic Center are
now open through the second week of
August.
Cost is $4 per person or $13 for a group of four at McMurtrey and
$1 per person at MLK, Jefferson and Silver Creek. Children 2-years-
old and younger all get in free. All pools will be closed on July 22.

Silver Creek Park pool, 7011 Harris Road
New playground equipment installed at Campus Park
South
Just in time for the summer, new playground equipment has been
installed at Campus Park South and is ready for the kiddos to use.
The new playground is for children 2-5 years old.
Along with the new playground equipment, there will be other
improvements, including ADA-compliant drinking fountains,
concrete picnic tables and benches.
There are also plans in the near future for ADA-compliant sidewalk
improvements.

The projects will cost a little more than $280,000 and are made
possible thanks to the Public Safety & Vital Services Measure
(Measure N).

New picnic areas complete at Jastro Park
Anyone visiting Jastro Park (2900 Truxtun Ave.) can now keep cool in
the new picnic areas that were just completed this week.
The areas include shade structures, tables and barbecues near the
spray park on the southeast end of the park.
The project cost was a little more than $122,000 and is paid for
through the Public Safety & Vital Services Measure (Measure N).
Anyone interested in reserving the area can do so by visiting the
Recreation & Parks Department's website.

Jehovah's Witness conventions return to Mechanics

This weekend marks the return of the Jehovah’s Witnesses
conventions to Bakers eld's Mechanics Bank Arena.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses have a long history of holding their annual
conventions in Bakers eld during the summer, but that tradition was
paused in 2020 worldwide due to the pandemic.
According to Visit Bakers eld, the Jehovah’s Witnesses are the
largest group that meets in Bakers eld, and those who attend ll
local hotel rooms and restaurants.
This year, the group will hold ve weekend conventions in
Bakers eld. The rst kicks off Friday morning and runs through
Sunday. The future convention dates are June 23-25, June 30-July 2,
July 21-23, and July 28-30.
Convention of cials announced the rst day attendance on June 16,
was 4,300 visitors. They estimate nearly 25,000 people will attend
the conventions over the ve-weekend run.
All sessions will be held at Mechanics Bank Arena, 1001 Truxtun
Avenue.

League of California Cities highlights BLNC, City's
efforts to address homelessness
This week the League of California Cities recognized The City of
Bakers eld’s efforts to address homelessness, in a social media post.
Thanks to the City's Brundage Lane Navigation Center, 240
individuals are being served nightly. Another 260 individuals have
been moved out of the shelter and into a home of their own. All
together, 500 people have been moved off the streets of Bakers eld
by the BLNC since 2020.

innovative visionary to help lead the nonpro t organization as its
next Executive Director.
The Homeless Collaborative, jointly funded by the City of
Bakers eld and the County of Kern, performs regional planning for

The Bakers eld City Council is currently
recruiting for an individual to complete an
unexpired term on the Keep Bakers eld
Beautiful Committee (KBBC) due to the
resignation of Zechariah Garcia (Ward 2)
alternate member. The term runs
concurrent with the nominating
Councilmember and will expire in
December 2024.
The Councilmember from the respective Ward will nominate a
resident of the City of Bakers eld. The applicant for this recruitment
will be nominated by the Councilmember of Ward 5 and con rmed
by a majority vote of the full Council.

The KBBC recommends programs and activities to improve the
ecological and aesthetic value of Bakers eld through the proper
handling of solid waste, litter control and prevention, beauti cation,
education, and the recruitment of volunteers who will make a
positive difference in our community.
Applications are available at the City Clerk’s Of ce at City Hall
North (1600 Truxtun Avenue) and on the City’s website and should
be returned to the City Clerk’s Of ce. The position will remain open
until lled.
For further information and assistance regarding these
appointments, please contact the City Clerk’s Of ce at 661-326-
3767. Residents interested in serving on the KBBC are encouraged
to contact each City Councilmember regarding their interest and
quali cations.

Traf c Advisories
All lanes of NB Hwy. 99 set for
nighttime closures
Nighttime closures have been scheduled
for all lanes of northbound Highway 99
between Ming Avenue and Highway 58.
The closures will take place nightly from
June 18-22 for the release and removal of
falsework. The closures will begin at 11 p.m. and end at 5 a.m.
California Highway Patrol will be monitoring the construction zone.
During the closures, northbound drivers will be detoured to exit at
Ming Avenue, turn right on Ming Avenue, right on Wible Road, left on
California Avenue then turn right to re-enter the northbound
Highway 99 on-ramp.
NB99 to EB58 connector set for closure
Nighttime closures have been scheduled for the northbound State
Route 99 to eastbound State Route 58 connector. The closures will
take place June 18-22 for the release and removal of falsework. The
closures will begin at 9 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. California Highway
Patrol will be monitoring the construction zone.
During the closures, northbound to eastbound motorists will be
detoured to exit State Route 99 at California Avenue. At California

Avenue turn left/west then merge right to enter the southbound
State Route 99 on-ramp. Travel south along State Route 99 before
entering the eastbound State Route 58 connector ramp.
The City thanks the public for its patience and understanding during
the completion of these improvements.
Please note: Construction work may be postponed and rescheduled
without notice due to inclement weather and other unforeseen
conditions.
