Notable Items
City sites open to public to keep cool during hot
weekend
This weekend the National Weather Service is forecasting
temperatures in Bakers eld to reach upwards of 112 degrees.
To help keep citizens cool during this time, the City of Bakers eld will
be opening the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center (1000
S. Owens St.) to the public. The Community Center will be open
Saturday and Sunday, July 15-16, from noon - 5 p.m.
The City is also offering the Valley Children’s Ice Center (1325 Q St.)
as a location for the public to cool off. The Ice Center will be open
from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Friday, July 14; 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. Saturday; and 9
a.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday.

Economic & Community Development Dept. launches
Entrepreneurship Grant Program
The City's Economic & Community Development Department has
launched a new Entrepreneurship Grant Program to assist local
businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Businesses located within City limits and in a Quali ed Census Tract
(see map below) may be eligible for grants of $5,000, $10,000,
$25,000, or $40,000. Funding for the program comes from American
Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) money allocated to the City.
Grant funding may be used for payroll and bene ts, utilities,
mortgage or rent payments, license or permit fees, expansion costs,
operating expenses, and more.
Applicants must have completed technical assistance training
through one of the City’s partners in order to be eligible:
California State University, Bakers eld, Division of Extended
Education and Global Outreach and Small Business Development
Center
Bakers eld College Launchpad
Kern County Black Chamber of Commerce.
Applications will be available online on the City’s website and should
be submitted to the Economic & Community Development

Dozens celebrated during BPD promotion ceremony
Surrounded by family, friends and colleagues, dozens of members of
the Bakers eld Police Department were celebrated Thursday, July
13 during a promotion ceremony held in City Council Chambers at
City Hall South.

More than 150 students graduate from PAL Junior
Police Academy
More than 150 students were honored during a ceremony signaling
their graduation from the Bakers eld Police Activities League's
Junior Police Academy.
The ceremony was held July 7 at The Bridge Church.

The mission of the Junior Police Academy is to provide children and
teens with foundational law enforcement knowledge, while
enhancing social skills in an effort to become more productive
students and members of our community.
The academy focused on leadership training, accountability and
problem-solving skills. Curriculum included various presentations
from law enforcement agencies, hands-on practical skills and
physical training.
Bulky Item drop-off events
The City of Bakers eld's Solid Waste Division will host a pair of pop-
up large item drop-off events on Saturday, July 15 from 8 a.m. to
noon.
The events will be held in the parking lot of the Bakers eld Municipal
Airport (2000 S. Union Ave.) and at the Riverlakes Ranch Community
Center (3825 Riverlakes Drive).

3,000+ pounds of illegal reworks seized by Bakers eld
Fire, Police
The Bakers eld Fire and Police departments were busy over the
Independence Day holiday, as they seized more than 3,000 pounds of
illegal reworks.
Along with the reworks, more than $9,000 from illegal sales were
also seized and multiple arrests were made.

Bakers eld Fire present NFLers Jordan Love, Krys
Barnes with BFD t-shirts
On Saturday, July 8, Liberty High graduates and NFL players Jordan
Love and Krys Barnes returned to Bakers eld to host a free football
clinic for local youth.
Members of the Bakers eld Fire Department were on hand and
were able to give each of the players a BFD t-shirt.
Bakers eld Fire posted on its social media a picture of Love, the
starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, along with

with the Arizona Cardinals in the
offseason.
Public input sought for Niles &
Monterey Complete Streets Project
The City of Bakers eld is committed to
improving road safety and mobility for all
users to save lives and meet diverse needs
and challenges of our disadvantaged
communities.
The City is working to secure federal funds
for the Niles and Monterey Complete
Streets Project, which will transform these
corridors into safer, more accessible, and
pedestrian-friendly routes using Complete
Streets strategies.
These strategies focus on traf c calming, ADA modi cations, raised
cycle tracks, and new trees to improve users’ safety and travel.

All four City pools open for summer season
The Recreation & Parks Department's swimming pools are open for
recreational swim.
The pools at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jefferson and Silver Creek
parks, along with the McMurtrey Aquatic Center are now open
through the second week of August.
Cost is $4 per person or $13 for a group of four at McMurtrey and
$1 per person at MLK, Jefferson and Silver Creek. Children 2-years-
old and younger all get in free. All pools will be closed on July 22.

Traf c Advisories
SB 99 to Ming off-ramp set for
closure
A Nighttime closure has been scheduled
for the Southbound Highway 99 to Ming
Avenue off-ramp from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. July
18 for the installation of metal beam guard
rail.
During the closure, drivers can exit at the Stockdale Highway off-
ramp or White Lane off-ramp.
All lanes of NB 99 between Ming and 58 set for closures
Nighttime closures have been scheduled for all lanes of Northbound
Highway 99 between Ming Avenue and Highway 58 from 11 p.m. - 5
a.m. July 16-18 for the release and removal of falsework. This
includes the full closure of the connector ramp to Eastbound
Highway 58.

During the closures, northbound drivers will be detoured to exit at
Ming Avenue, turn right on Ming Avenue, right on Wible Road, and
left on California Avenue. They will then turn right to enter the
Northbound 99 on-ramp or the second right to enter the
Southbound 99 on-ramp to get to Eastbound 58.
WB58 to 99 connector set for closure
Nighttime closures have been scheduled for the westbound Highway
58 to southbound Highway 99 connector. The closures will take
place July 17 for the installation of metal beam guard rail. The
closures will begin at 9 p.m. and end at 5 a.m.
During the closures, westbound drivers will be detoured to
Northbound 99. From the 99 exit and turn left at California Avenue
then merge right to enter the Southbound 99 on-ramp.
The City thanks the public for its patience and understanding during
the completion of these improvements.
Please note: Construction work may be postponed and rescheduled
without notice due to inclement weather and other unforeseen
conditions.
