Notable Items
State of the City
City Manager Christian Clegg and Mayor
Karen Goh attended and spoke at the
annual State of the City event hosted by
the Greater Bakers eld Chamber of
Commerce on Wednesday, July 19. Several
department directors, managers and staff
members were also on-hand.
In his remarks, Clegg spoke about the
potential of the City, as well as the
improvements to infrastructure such as
street repairs following the winter storms,
improvements to bike and pedestrian safety made over the last year
and leveraging state and federal funding through grants for local

projects. Through the City's new gun violence reduction strategy,
we've seen reductions in homicides from 2022 (40%), gang shootings
(49%) and Shotspotter activations (30%) - all positive results
demonstrating that the strategy is working.
The launch of the new Park Rangers program and an emphasis on the
Adopt-A-Park program have also helped us take back our public
spaces from undesirable activity and made parks places for families
to enjoy.
While there are still concerns with the impacts of homelessness and
a potential economic downturn looming, the City Manager's Of ce
and City staff are con dent the City is prepared to handle whatever
may come. The Mayor mentioned that the City has funded a tripling
of beds for homeless individuals, including 118 new beds at the
Brundage Lane Navigation Center which came online early in 2023.
Bakers eld also has the fewest unsheltered homeless per capita in
California. To stave off economic woes, the City boasts a $50 million
reserve set aside as well.
