Gun Violence Reduction Strategy shows promising
results
The Gun Violence Reduction Strategy (GVRS) the City of Bakers eld
and the Bakers eld Police Department implemented in January
2022 is showing promising results just 18 months after its launch.
City Manager Christian Clegg presented a report on the GVRS – an
analysis prepared by The California Partnership for Safe
Communities – to the City Council on Wednesday, Aug. 9.
The GVRS allows the City of Bakers eld and Bakers eld Police
Department to use a data-driven and community partnership-based
approach, developing intervention strategies focused on reducing
retaliatory shootings, as well as supporting victims. Residents

identi ed as at imminent risk of violence
are contacted directly and supported
through one-on-one or small group
meetings with City and community leaders.
The GVRS is funded by the California
Violence Intervention Program (CalVIP),
and is supplemented by resources from the
Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS)
Measure which allows City and community
leaders to analyze the dynamics of violence
in Bakers eld and the needs of young
people at highest risk of involvement in
violence to more effectively intervene,
increase case solvability and break the
cycle of violence.
Key successes highlighted in the report include:
Total homicides in the City dropped from 44 in 2020 and 60 in
2021 to 38 in 2022 after the GVRS launched in January of that
year – a 37% decrease from 2021-22 and reverses a rising trend
observed since 2019.
The reduction has continued into 2023, with an additional 33%
reduction through June.
There has also been a 31% decrease in gun violence overall in
2022 compared to 2021.
Compared to four peer cities, Bakers eld had the largest drop in
homicides from 2021 through 2022.
