Non-Agenda item Public Statement Regina Pryor from the Sister City Corporation talked about the program and invited the Youth Commissioners to get involved. Mayor Goh announced the Great American Cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023. She invited everyone to participate. Eric Galvan announced he was going to be taking pictures. 3. SUMMARY REPORT a. Adoption of minutes of the November 28, 2022, Youth Commission meeting. 3. SUMMARY REPORT continued Motion to approve the minutes from the November 28, 2022 meeting by Commissioner Beardsley, seconded by Commissioner H. Brar. Motion passed unanimously. 4. NEW BUSINESS a. Discussion and planning of the annual Youth Commission project Including the collaboration with the Applecore Project Inc, a donation drive to collect hygiene items, snacks, and school supplies to support families and teens living in local motels Commissioner Bell stated that at the last meeting the Commissioners decided to collect school supplies. Commissioners also discussed creating a flyer announcing the donation drive that can be posted on social media. Commissioner Webster informed she designed some draft ideas and could present them to the Commisioners. Tentative dates were set for Sunday, March 19 and Sunday, March 26. The market is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Commissioner Pursel suggested scheduling volunteer shifts from 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. This would allow time to set up and then clean up after. There was a consensus as to having three two-hour shifts, likely to be held as follows: 7:45 a.m. to 945 a.m., 9:45 a.m. to 1 1 :45 a.m., and 1 1 :45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Assigning the Commissioners to these times will be done at a later date. The Commissioners decided that any cash donations would be given directly to Applecore. A goal was set to have the flyers ready to go by February 27. Commissioners will inquire at their respective schools if they can set up donation boxes at their school sites. 5. STAFF COMMENTS Management Assistant Gutierrez thanked everyone for attending the meeting. He also thanked Mayor Goh for attending and announcing the date for the Great American Cleanup. He reminded the Commissioners to save the date. He thanked Regina Pryor for attending and bringing information about the Sister City Program. Associate Attorney Villanueva reminded the Commissioners to inform Management Assistant Gutierrez if they wished to place a matter on the Agenda before it is posted. i 6. COMMISSION COMMENTS Commissioner Bell requested the tentative donation drive dates of March 19 and March 26 be placed on the next agenda for approval. Commissioner Taft requested that at the next meeting Commissioners inform if their respective schools approved hosting a donation drop box. 7. The donation drive will benefit youth and their families living in motels in Bakersfield. School supplies collected by the Youth Commission during those weekends will be given to the Apple Core Project Inc to deliver to teens and families in need.
