Gov. Gavin Newsom's Senior Advisor on Homelessness, Hafsa Kaka,
visited the City's Brundage Lane Navigation Center on Wednesday,
Sept. 13 for a roundtable discussion on the City's efforts to address
the number one issue among residents in Bakers eld, and to hear
how the state can best support us as we work to overcome the
challenges associated with the homelessness crisis.

Hafsa Kaka was given a tour of the 268-bed facility in addition to
hearing from Mayor Karen Goh, Vice Mayor Andre Gonzales, City
Manager Christian Clegg and other City staff - from Code
Enforcement to the Bakers eld Police Department to the Park
Rangers. Also in the discussion were our many City partners,
including Mercy House, Flood Ministries, and Kern County
Behavioral Health and Recovery Services.

Kern Medical staff provided a tour of the recuperative care dorm at
the BLNC, explaining how the unit lls a gap in medical care for those
who can't get care once they are discharged from a local hospital.

Kaka visited the BLNC's newly expanded pet kennel and heard about
the development of the upcoming comprehensive regional action
plan.
During the discussion and after, she expressed how impressed she
was with the facility, the City's efforts and our partnerships with
other local agencies to give a compassionate response to addressing
the homelessness crisis. She also said she would be bringing what she
learned from the discussion back to the Governor's of ce.
Pop-up large item drop-off event set for Saturday
The City of Bakers eld's Solid Waste Division will host a pop-up
large item drop-off event on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 8 a.m. to noon.
The event will be held at 15050 Stockdale Highway near the west
end of the Westside Parkway. These events are part of Bakers eld's
Clean City Initiative and are funded by the Public Safety & Vital
Services (PSVS) Measure, also known as Measure N.
More than 76,000 pounds of trash and recycling were collected at
the events held on Aug. 12.

More than 160 dogs vaccinated at
September low-cost clinic!
The City's monthly low-cost pet
vaccination clinic returned on Saturday,
Sept. 9 after taking the summer months off,
serving more dogs than than any other
month this year so far!
The Animal Care Center provided 303 vaccinations to 165 dogs at
Beach Park. They also microchipped 65 animals. Microchips are
provided free to City residents with the purchase of a license.
The most recent clinic, held in May, saw nearly 320 total vaccines
given to 159 dogs. The next clinic is set for Saturday, Oct. 7 at Beale
Park (500 Oleander Street).

Fire, Police departments host annual 9/11 memorial
ceremony
The Bakers eld Fire and Police Departments hosted their annual
9/11 memorial ag ceremony on Monday, Sept. 11 at Bakers eld
Fire Station 15. The somber event was held in front of the steel
girder from the World Trade Center memorializing the lives lost 22
years ago and also featured the Bakers eld Fire ghters Pipes &
Drums.

City adds new bike repair station along Kern River

Anyone riding their bikes on the Kern River
Parkway near Beach Park will now be
greeted by a new bicycle repair station.
The City's Public Works Department
recently installed a Dero FixIt Bike Repair
station on the northwest side of Beach
Park.
Riders can use the station to in ate tires or use a handful of tools to
make quick repairs. The station will also allow riders to mount their
bikes, making for easier access to any potential xes.

The City’s Economic & Community
Development Department on Friday
launched a new, competitive Downtown
Economic Opportunity Area Business
Improvement and Expansion grant
program to promote economic growth in
Bakers eld, speci cally the Downtown
EOA area (see map at right).
Applications are now being accepted, with
the grants available for property and/or business owners within the
Downtown EOA to make site improvements and expand their
business, including exterior façade improvements, non-structural
site enhancements or publicly visible interior improvements.
Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2023. The City's ECD
Department will also host a free webinar Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m.
to assist with the application process.

City's Human Resources Department recruits at CSUB
As California State University, Bakers eld students get settled into a
new school year and start thinking about their future careers in the
workforce, representatives from the City's Human Resources
Department set up on campus this week to recruit and answer any
questions from potential future City employees.
HR representatives Tanya Wilson and Asia Wofford were on hand in
the RunnerCafe Quad on Thursday, Sept. 14, speaking to dozens of
students interested in learning more about career opportunities
with the City.

improvements along the Monitor Street School Corridor, which
stretches from South High School to the north on Planz Road down
to Golden Valley High School on the south end on Hosking Avenue.
The City will work to secure funds through the Active Transportation
Program, which is run by the California Department of
Transportation (Caltrans).

Public input sought for Niles & Monterey Complete
Streets Project
The City of Bakers eld is committed to
improving road safety and mobility for all
users to save lives and meet diverse needs
and challenges of our disadvantaged
communities.
The City is working to secure federal funds
for the Niles and Monterey Complete
Streets Project, which will transform these
corridors into safer, more accessible, and
pedestrian-friendly routes using Complete
Streets strategies.
These strategies focus on traf c calming, ADA modi cations, raised
cycle tracks, and new trees to improve users’ safety and travel.

Truxtun Avenue between Chester Avenue
and L Street will be closed the evening of
Friday, Sept. 15 for a third-party special
event.
The closure is set to begin at 5 p.m. and end
at 9 p.m.
Drivers are advised to use alternate routes
when driving through Downtown during this closure.
The City thanks the public for its understanding during this closure.
Brimhall Road repaving set for week of Sept. 18
The City of Bakers eld’s Public Works Department will reduce
Brimhall Road to one lane between Coffee Road and Calloway Drive
during road construction and repaving work starting Monday, Sept.
18, 2023.
The lane reduction is expected to last from 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
each day, Sept. 18 – 22.
Traf c delays are expected as a result of this work and drivers are
advised to plan for additional travel time through these areas during
the work, or to use alternative routes.
The City thanks the public for its patience and understanding during
the completion of these improvements.
Please note: Construction work may be postponed and rescheduled
without notice due to inclement weather and other unforeseen
conditions.
Pavement rehabilitation project set for Manor Street
A pavement rehabilitation project on Manor Street between
Columbus Street and the Kern River is set to begin Monday, Sept. 18.

The reconstruction of the roadway will take place from 7 a.m. to 7:30
p.m. Monday through Friday, from Sept. 18 to Nov. 6.
Traf c delays are expected as a result of this work and drivers are
advised to use caution and plan for additional travel time through
these areas during the work, or to use alternative routes.
There may be temporary road closures at intersections and ramps
during the reconstruction, however, detours and alternative routes
will be provided during these phases of construction.

Reverse traf c control on Real Road
Real Road will be agged for one-way directional traf c between
Stockdale Highway and Elcia Drive from Monday, Sept. 18 through
Friday, Sept. 22 for slope paving work. A single lane will remain open
with aggers directing traf c. The closures are scheduled from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m.
Please note: Construction schedules may be changed without notice
due to unforeseen circumstances. The Thomas Roads Improvement
Program apologizes for any inconvenience this work may cause the
traveling public.

Avenue intersections
The City of Bakers eld continues to work to bring traf c calming
measures to its streets to make them as safe as possible for all
drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and others.

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 19, City crews will be installing traf c calming
measures such as rubber curbing, planters, striping and markings,
pedestrian countdown timers, and highly-visible pedestrian
crossings and bike lanes on Beale Avenue at the roadway’s
intersections with Monterey Street and Niles Street.
The construction will be underway from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday
through Friday until completion expected on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
Traf c delays are expected as a result of this work and drivers are
advised to plan for additional travel time through these areas during
the work, or to use alternative routes.
Temporary road closures at the impacted intersections may be
required at times during the construction, though detours and
alternative routes will be provided at those times.
The City thanks the public for its patience and understanding during
the completion of these improvements to make our residents safer.

Alternating lane closures on EB & WB Westside
Parkway
Nighttime lane closures have been scheduled for eastbound and
westbound Westside Parkway between Coffee Road and Truxtun
Avenue on Wednesday, Sept. 20 and Thursday Sept. 21. The lane
closures will take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. for the removal of
existing striping. One or more lanes will remain open at all times and
the work will occur on one direction per night. California Highway
Patrol will be monitoring the construction zone.
Construction schedules may be changed without notice due to

Crews to install speed humps along Laurel Drive and
Sandra Drive
The City of Bakers eld continues to work to bring traf c calming
measures to its streets to make them as safe as possible for all
drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and others. That includes installation
of speed humps to reduce vehicle speeds in neighborhoods.
On Thursday, Sept. 21, City Public Works crews and contractors will
reduce the entire length of Laurel Drive to one lane between Dorian
Drive and Planz Road to install four (4) three-inch asphalt speed
humps on the recently paved road. The work is expected to start at 7
a.m. and be completed by 5 p.m. the same day. Short-term detours or
traf c agging may be used during the installation, but at least one
lane is expected to remain open most of the day.
On Friday, Sept. 22, crews will install three (3) three-inch asphalt
speed humps on Sandra Drive between S. Chester Avenue and Planz
Road, requiring the roadway to be reduced to one lane. The work is
expected to start at 7 a.m. and be completed by 5 p.m. the same day.
Short-term detours or traf c agging may be used during the
installation, but at least one lane is expected to remain open most of
the day.
Traf c delays are expected as a result of both projects and drivers
are advised to plan for additional travel time through these areas
during the work, or to use alternative routes.

“Spectrum has reached a deal with The Walt Disney Company and
this channel is no longer available. While many of the channels you
