Community gathers to honor history during unveiling of
Sunset May ower Park
Looking to honor the rich African-American history of the area, the
Recreation & Parks Department, along with members of the
community, gathered Friday, Oct. 27 for a ribbon cutting and
unveiling of Sunset May ower Park.
The park is located along Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in the
Sunset May ower District where the local Black community enjoyed
music ranging from rock to jazz to soul and the blues. The stretch of
road that was once Lakeview Avenue was lined with “juke joints” that
hosted acts such as Little Richard, Etta James and B.B. King, as well
as other local favorites.
