for Saturday, Nov. 4
The Animal Control Field Services' monthly
low-cost drive-through pet vaccination
clinic is set for 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday,
Nov. 4 at Jastro Park (2900 Truxtun
Avenue).
Vaccines for your furry friends will be
available, and microchips are free to City residents with the
purchase of a license.

2023 Vaccination Clinic Schedule
Local businesses received more
than $240,000 through security
improvements grant program
The City’s Business Security Improvements
Grant program has been a resounding
success! Since launching in July, more than
$240,000 have been awarded to local
businesses for security improvements such
as installing new alarm systems, security
cameras, enhanced lighting, and repairing damaged or destroyed
windows.
Due to the program’s success, all available funds allocated to the
program have been awarded or are currently earmarked for pending
applications. Any applications for the Security Improvements Grant
program received at this point will be placed on a wait list until
additional funding can be identi ed.
More than 25,000 pounds of trash collected at large
item drop-off event in October
The October pop-up large trash item drop-
off event held at Mesa Marin Sports
Complex collected more than 25,000
pounds of trash and another 590 pounds of
recycling. The Clean City Initiative-
supported event saw 141 residents come
through to drop off unwanted bulky items
such as 20 mattresses, 10 tires, 74 e-waste items and 4,620 pounds
of metal.
These events have been held once a month since January 2021 to
provide residents an opportunity to get rid of bulky items too large

to t in residential trash bins for pick-up.
New Kern River Trail shade structure erected
If you're using the Kern River Trail on the west end and need a break
in the shade, you're in luck: The City's Recreation & Parks
Department this week completed construction of a new shade
structure and benches on the trail between S. Allen Road and Enos
Lane (see map at right) to provide a bit of an oasis for bike riders and
other trail users.

The $76,000 project was funded through
the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS)
Measure - also known as Measure N - and
the Park Amenities and Renovation
Improvements (PARI) program.
McMurtrey pool to close for winter maintenance
The City's Recreation & Parks Department
will close the McMurtrey Aquatics Center
starting Monday, Nov. 6 for winter
maintenance and improvements.
Among the planned work are
improvements to the concrete decking
around the pool, as well as the installation of additional shade
structures. The facility is expected to re-open by Monday, Jan. 1,
2024 in time for the annual Polar Bear Plunge held at McMurtrey
Pool each year.
The City thanks the public for its understanding and cooperation
during the completion of these improvements.

BPD arrests four, screens more than 1,000 vehicles in
DUI/Driver's License checkpoint
Four drivers were arrested as part of the
Bakers eld Police Department's
DUI/Driver's License Checkpoint on Friday,
Oct. 27, an effort funded by a grant from
the California Of ce of Traf c Safety.
Among the four drivers arrested, three
were for suspicion of driving under the
in uence of alcohol - and two of which had
previous DUI convictions - one was arrested on an outstanding
felony warrant. One passenger was arrested on weapons possession
and resisting arrest charges.
In all, the checkpoint screened 1,043 vehicles in the 200 block of
Union Avenue between 6 p.m. and midnight,
Two dozen vehicles were seized at the checkpoint and eight drivers
were cited for driving with a suspended license.
The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if
they see a suspected impaired driver.
Beale Avenue traf c calming measures underway
The City of Bakers eld continues to work
to bring traf c calming measures to its
streets to make them as safe as possible for
all drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and
others. One project that will help in those
efforts can be found where Beale Avenue
intersects with Niles and Monterey Streets.
Work is underway to install new traf c calming elements to the two
intersections, including reducing three lanes of traf c down to two,
with a new bike lane and additional street parking added in its place.

Other safety improvements that will be included are rubber curbing,
planters, striping and markings, pedestrian countdown timers, and
high-visible pedestrian crossings.
Traf c delays are expected as crews complete the project, which is
expected to be nished by December. Drivers are asked to be aware
of workers while driving through these areas and to plan for
additional travel time or to use alternate routes. We thank the public
for their patience!
Niles & Monterey Complete Streets Project community
meeting set for Nov. 7
The City of Bakers eld is committed to improving road safety and
mobility for all users to save lives and meet diverse needs and
challenges of our disadvantaged communities.

The City is working to secure federal funds
for the Niles and Monterey Complete
Streets Project, which will transform these
corridors into safer, more accessible, and
pedestrian-friendly routes using Complete
Streets strategies.
To better understand the public's needs
and wants, the City will host a community
meeting on the Niles & Monterey
Complete Streets Project at 6:30 p.m. on
Tuesday, Nov. 7 at the Boys & Girls Club
(801 Niles Street). Translation and childcare services as well as food
will be available on-site.
These strategies focus on traf c calming, ADA modi cations, raised
cycle tracks, and new trees to improve users’ safety and travel.

Closures planned for two Stockdale Highway
intersections for pavement rehab project
Work related to a pavement rehabilitation
project will require the full closures of the
Stockdale Highway and New Stine Road
intersection and Stockdale Highway and
Ashe Road intersection on Saturday, Nov.
4.
The rst closure – at Stockdale and New
Stine – is set to begin at midnight on
Saturday and is expected to end around 10 a.m. the same day as
crews perform the rehabilitation work.
New Stine Road will be re-opened before the second closure at
Stockdale and Ashe, which is planned to start around 10 a.m. and end
at approximately 3 p.m. the same day.
No through traf c will be allowed at the intersections during each
closure. Detours will be in place at the nearest arterial street to the
affected intersection, with aggers positioned at each closure to
allow local traf c to access nearby residences and businesses.
Traf c delays are expected as a result of this work and drivers are
advised to use caution and plan for additional travel time through
these areas during the work, or to use alternative routes.
Overnight lane closure planned on
northbound Hwy 99
A nighttime lane closure has been
scheduled for northbound State Route 99
between Ming Avenue and State Route 58.
The closure will take place on Sunday, Nov.
5 for the installation of overhead sign.
Nov. 4 pavement rehabilitation road closures: 1)
Stockdale Highway and New Stine Road,
midnight to aprox. 10 a.m.; 2) Stockdale Highway
and Ashe Road, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The closure will begin at 10 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. One lane will
remain open at all times during the lane closure. California Highway
Patrol will be monitoring the construction zone.
Sewer line repairs require two-week closure of Service
Street
A sewer line repair project will require the full, 24-hour-a-day
closure of Service Street between Chester Avenue and Eye Street in
Downtown Bakers eld for two weeks starting Monday, Nov. 6.
The closure is needed as crews complete sewer line repairs in the
area. Service Street will be impassable for both vehicles and
pedestrians during this closure, though access for deliveries will be
allowed on Eye Street. There will be no through-access permitted.
Traf c delays may result from this closure and work and drivers are
advised to plan for extra travel time or to use alternate routes.
This closure is expected to last until Friday, Nov. 24.
Nighttime closure of westbound Hwy 58 at Chester
Avenue planned
A nighttime closure has been scheduled for westbound State Route
58 at Chester Avenue. The closure will take place on Monday, Nov. 6
for the installation of an overhead sign. The closure will begin at 10
p.m. and end at 5 a.m. California Highway Patrol will be monitoring
the construction zone.
During the closure, westbound to northbound 99 motorists will be
detoured to exit at Chester Avenue. Turn right/north on Chester
Avenue. Turn left/west on Brundage Lane. Turn right/north on Oak
Street. Turn left/west on California Avenue. Turn right to enter the
northbound State Route 99 on-ramp.
Westbound to southbound 99 motorists will be detoured to exit at
Chester Avenue. Turn right/north on Chester Avenue. Turn left/west

on Brundage Lane. Turn left/south on Wible Road. Turn right/west

Overnight closures scheduled for Mohawk Street
Nighttime lane closures have been scheduled for northbound and
southbound Mohawk Street between Truxtun Avenue and Rosedale
Highway for the installation of signal poles. The northbound lane
closure will occur on Tuesday Nov. 7, southbound on Wednesday
Nov. 8, and Thursday Nov. 9 if needed.
The lane closures will start at 10 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. The two outer
lanes will be closed for the work and the inner lane remain open at all
times. California Highway Patrol will be monitoring the construction
zone.
