Holiday Closure
The City of Bakers eld's administrative
of ces - including City Hall North (1600
Truxtun Avenue) - will be closed on
Monday, Dec. 25 in observance of the
Christmas holiday.
The of ces will re-open at 8 a.m. as normal
on Tuesday, Dec. 26.
Residential trash and recycling collection
services will be delayed one day as a result
of the closure.
The Mt. Vernon Green Waste Facility will be closed on Christmas
Day (Dec. 25), re-opening at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 26.

Notable Items
Christmas tree recycling program returns!
The City's free Christmas tree recycling program returns starting
Tuesday, Dec. 26, allowing residents to drop off their real trees at
three locations.
Until Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024, Christmas trees may be recycled at:
The City's Mt. Vernon Organics
Recycling & Composting Facility, 7 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. The
Organic Waste Facility is located at
2601 South Mt. Vernon Avenue, two
miles south of Highway 58. The facility
is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
The Bakers eld College parking lot at
the northwest corner of Haley Street
and University Avenue, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.
The Kern County Fairgrounds south parking lot, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
seven days a week. The parking lot is located at the corner of
Belle Terrace and P Street.
Only real trees are accepted – no plastic or otherwise fake trees will
be accepted. Please remove all ornaments, bulbs, lights, and plastic
or metal stands before dropping trees off.
Real Christmas trees may also be placed in your green waste
container by cutting the tree down to t inside the container. The
tree must allow the lid to close completely. All ornaments, bulbs,
lights, plastic and metal stands must be removed from the tree.
Those items may be placed in the tan trash container.

Santa's Winter Wonderland makes stop at MLK
Community Center
Dozens of families got Christmas started early on Friday, Dec. 22, as
they were whisked away to Santa's Winter Wonderland at the Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

Children up to 15 years old lined up to meet Santa Claus and to get
early gifts.

many of whom served as Santa's helpers.

City, Governor's Of ce celebrate $22 million Southeast
Strong grant at Bakers eld Senior Center
The City of Bakers eld and the California
Governor's Of ce, along with local
stakeholders and advocates, celebrated the
awarding of more than $22 million in grant
funding to the Southeast Strong
Transformative Climate Communities
(TCC) project on Monday, Dec. 18.
Of cials gathered at the Bakers eld Senior
Center where a portion of that funding will
be used to build a new facility that will include affordable senior
housing. The grant will also fund projects for improving biking,
walking and transportation in the Southeast Bakers eld area, as well
as urban greening projects.

Annual Polar Bear Plunge returns in January - register
now!
The Recreation & Parks Department's
Annual Polar Bear Plunge returns to
McMurtrey Aquatic Center on Monday,
Jan. 1!
Dive into the New Year in style - and cold! -
at the 16th Annual Polar Bear Plunge. Last
January we saw 116 people brave 59
degree water and 51 degree outdoor
temperature.
You can take the slide into the pool and
then swim 25 yards to dry land. Hot
chocolate will also be available for
participants and specators.
Pre-registration is open now, and you can also register on Jan. 1 at
the pool. Artic Glacier is once again sponsoring this exciting event
which has become a Bakers eld tradition for many families and a
great way to kick-off the New Year!

Don't pour used cooking oil or grease down the drain -
bring it to the City's holiday grease collection event!
The City of Bakers eld’s annual Holiday
Grease Collection event is back for the
2023-24 holiday season, offering a safe
disposal option for cooking oil and grease
for Bakers eld residents.
Disposing of used cooking oil and grease
down residential drains can result in
clogged pipes and other damage, causing backups. Instead, residents
can stop by either of the City’s Holiday Grease Collection locations

and dispose of used oil and grease in a safe and environmentally
friendly way.
Hear from City staff how to dispose of your used cooking oil and
grease the proper way in the video linked above!
Residents are asked to collect their used cooking oil and grease in
sealed containers before dropping it off at the locations. There is no
charge to dispose of used cooking oil and grease during the event.
The 2023 Holiday Grease Collection Event runs through Friday, Jan.
5, 2024.
Cooking oil and grease drop-off locations:

McCutchen Road)
North of the River Sanitary District main of ce (204 Universe
Avenue)
Residents may drop off their used cooking oil and grease at those
locations from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, Monday through Friday.
The event’s City location is closed on Dec. 25, 2023 and Jan. 1, 2024

Traf c Advisories
Temporary intersection closures planned in Downtown
Bakers eld
The City’s Public Works Department is
expected to start a project to improve the
storm drain system near 20th and P streets
on Dec. 11, work that will require the
closure of some intersections in
Downtown Bakers eld.
As a result of this work, 20th Street
between O and Q streets, as well as P
Street between 20th and 21st, and Q Street between 20th and 21st

will be closed temporarily. No traf c will be allowed at these
intersections.
This portion of the project is expected to be completed by Friday,
Dec. 29. The closures will be 24-hours a day and detours will be in
place at the nearest intersections before reaching these impacted
areas.
Traf c delays are expected as a result, so drivers are advised to avoid
these areas, use extra caution, plan for additional travel time, or plan
to use alternate routes.
The City thanks the public for its patience and understanding during
the completion of these improvements.
Please note: Construction work may be postponed and rescheduled
without notice due to inclement weather and other unforeseen
conditions.
