More than 200 take the Polar Plunge at McMurtrey
Aquatic Center on New Year's Day!
There was no fear at McMurtrey Aquatic
Center on New Year's Day as more than
200 people took the plunge into the icy
cold waters for the Recreation & Parks
Department's 16th Annual Polar Bear
Plunge!
The 59 degree water was no deterrent as
this year's total of 219 was nearly twice
last year's 116 plungers. Including
spectators, a total of 548 attended this
year's event!
Participants took the slide into the pool and then swam 25 yards to
dry land. Hot chocolate was also be available for participants and
spectators.
Artic Glacier once again sponsored this exciting event which has
become a Bakers eld tradition for many families and a great way to
kick-off the New Year.

Monthly low-cost pet vaccination clinics return for
2024
The Bakers eld Animal Care Center's monthly low-cost vaccination
clinics continue to be popular for owners to keep their dogs healthy
and licensed. The clinics return for 2024 starting on Saturday, Feb. 3
at University Park (4301 University Avenue).

The City of Bakers eld, led by the
Economic and Community Development
Department, will host a kick-off summit
later this month to launch the Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Prosperity Neighborhood
Initiative. Please join us as we discuss a
vision for building a more prosperous
community.
In 2022, the City launched the Prosperity
Neighborhood Initiative to enhance community revitalization efforts
and create transformative change through collective impact. The
initiative is centered around a collaboration of community partners
and residents working together to enhance neighborhood vitality
with the long-term goal of disrupting cycles of intergenerational
poverty.
As a kick-off to the initiative's work in Southeast Bakers eld, the City
will host its rst Prosperity Neighborhood summit from 6 to 7:30
p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community
Center (1000 S. Owens Street). The public's collaboration and
valuable insights are crucial in developing the community
revitalization framework, and we eagerly anticipate your
contribution to foster transformative change in the community.
Food, childcare, and translation services will be available for all
attendees.

Christmas tree recycling program continues into next
week
If you still need to get rid of your Christmas tree, there's still time to
drop it off for the City's recycling program... but that time is running
out!
The program started on Dec. 26, allowing residents to drop off their
real trees at three locations and it will be available until Thursday,
Jan. 11.
Christmas trees may be recycled at:
The City's Mt. Vernon Organics
Recycling & Composting Facility, 7 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. The
Organic Waste Facility is located at
2601 South Mt. Vernon Avenue, two
miles south of Highway 58. The facility
is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

The Bakers eld College parking lot at the northwest corner of
Haley Street and University Avenue, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a
week.
The Kern County Fairgrounds south parking lot, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
seven days a week. The parking lot is located at the corner of
Belle Terrace and P Street.
Only real trees are accepted – no plastic or otherwise fake trees will
be accepted. Please remove all ornaments, bulbs, lights, and plastic
or metal stands before dropping trees off.
Real Christmas trees may also be placed in your green waste
container by cutting the tree down to t inside the container. The
tree must allow the lid to close completely. All ornaments, bulbs,
lights, plastic and metal stands must be removed from the tree.
Those items may be placed in the tan trash container.
