A public ribbon cutting ceremony
celebrating the $609 million Centennial
Corridor has been set for 11 a.m. on Friday,
Feb. 9 on the new freeway.
The event - which is open to the public - will feature speakers
integral to the project and its completion, including retired
Bakers eld Congressman Bill Thomas, representatives from
Caltrans and the Kern Council of Governments.
“The City of Bakers eld is eternally grateful to former Congressman
Bill Thomas for his tireless efforts in securing hundreds of millions of
dollars for this project,” Bakers eld City Manager Christian Clegg
said. “This is an exciting time to see this project completed after
nearly 20 years.”
The Centennial Corridor is part of the Thomas Roads Improvement
Program (TRIP), projects identi ed as necessary to relieve the stress
on outdated infrastructure, caused by years of rapid growth in
population, inter-regional travel, and freight movement. The projects
will facilitate regional mobility, economic growth, and development,
as well as reduce the travel time through major transportation
corridors.

Dozens of volunteers hit the streets early Wednesday morning in an
effort to help those experiencing homelessness.
The annual Point-In-Time Count, organized by the Bakers eld-Kern
Regional Homeless Collaborative, helps municipalities get an
accurate count on the number of individuals experiencing
homelessness with the hopes of securing more funding to help
provide needed services.
Bakers eld Mayor Karen Goh, Vice Mayor Andrae Gonzales (Ward
2), Councilmember Eric Arias (Ward 1) and City staff were among
those who volunteered, hitting the streets at 4 a.m.
The of cial count will be released by the Homeless Collaborative in
the coming months.

Residents pack MLK Community Center for Prosperity
Neighborhood summit
It was a packed house at the Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. Community Center on
Tuesday night as more than 160 residents
shared their priorities with the City's
Prosperity Neighborhood Initiative.
In 2022, the City launched the Prosperity
Neighborhood Initiative to enhance
community revitalization efforts and

collective impact. The initiative is centered around a collaboration of
community partners and residents working together to enhance
neighborhood vitality with the long-term goal of disrupting cycles of
intergenerational poverty.
Residents participated in exercises where they were able to vote on
a number of projects and programs that would help in the
revitalization of the Prosperity Neighborhood.
Going forward, City staff will use this feedback to create a
framework to address the issues raised by residents. Some primary
areas of focus for residents include childhood education, access to
neighborhood rehabilitation, and business support services. We look
forward to continuing this project effort and are excited to present
further opportunities for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prosperity
Neighborhood community.

The City of Bakers eld has started the
process of updating its General Plan. The
General Plan is the City’s overall guide for
community growth, housing,
transportation, and quality of life and
guides land use decisions made by the City
Council, Planning Commission, and City
staff. The updated General Plan will
represent the community’s vision of its
future and determine the City’s community
development goals over the next 20 years.
Bakers eld City staff invites all interested community members to
participate in an online Land Use Alternatives Townhall Meeting
from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30. This meeting will be held
virtually via Zoom. The link will be posted
at www.bakers eld2045.com.
This meeting will provide those who were unable to attend the rst
Land Use Alternatives workshop with an additional opportunity to
provide feedback. This workshop will guide residents through the
interactive Land Use Alternatives Community Survey, which gives
community members an opportunity to discuss growth
opportunities and engage in a holistic discussion on their
development preferences in Bakers eld. Residents who are not able
to attend this virtual meeting are still able to complete the survey
and will be able to watch the recorded meeting, which will be posted
to the General Plan Update Project website. Community input is
essential in developing a Plan that is responsive to local needs.
The City encourages all those interested in helping to plan for
Bakers eld’s future to attend this townhall meeting and/or to
participate in future community engagement events (accessible
through the General Plan website).
We encourage all to attend and share their ideas for the future of
Bakers eld!
