Notable Items
Homicides continue to decrease in Bakers eld since
launch of GVRS in 2022
The City of Bakers eld implemented a Gun
Violence Reduction Strategy (GVRS) in
January 2022, focused on identifying those
at the highest risk of gun violence. The City
partners with local law enforcement
agencies and community-based
organizations to reduce retaliatory
shootings, as well as to support and
connect those residents identi ed to wrap-
around services. The GVRS has continued to show promising
downward trends in gun violence within the City.
Key notable successes:
Homicides in the City dropped from 60 in 2021 to 38 in 2022
after the GVRS launched in January of that year, a 37% decrease
in 2022 compared to 2021, reversing the rising trend observed
since 2019.
Compared to four peer cities, Bakers eld had the largest drop in
homicides from 2021 through 2022.
Reduction in homicides continued in 2023, with 27 homicides, an
additional 29% reduction.
The GVRS funding received from the California Violence

City, local law enforcement agencies and community leaders to
continue analyzing the dynamics of violence in Bakers eld and the
needs of young people at highest risk of involvement in violence to
more effectively intervene, increase case solvability and break the
cycle of violence.
Youth violence is a growing concern within the City of Bakers eld
that poses a serious threat to the safety and well-being of
individuals, communities, and society. The most recent data reported
in the City’s California Violence Intervention and Prevention
Problem Analysis revealed that the percentage of young
perpetrators involved in gun violence is increasing. These acts of
violence not only result in physical harm but also have long-lasting
effects on mental health, academic performance, and prospects of
youth. The City will begin expanding its efforts on implementing
effective strategies focused on preventing youth violence by
promoting positive youth development.
