Presidents Day
The City of Bakers eld's administrative of ces - including City Hall
North (1600 Truxtun Avenue) - will be closed on Monday, Feb. 19 in
observance of Presidents Day.
The of ces will re-open at 8 a.m. as normal on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Notable Items
City launches new apprenticeship
program
The City of Bakers eld, in partnership with
the Kern Community Foundation and
California Volunteers, is proud to unveil
the City Hall Apprenticeship Program, a
six-month, paid apprenticeship designed to
provide invaluable work experiences for
youth aged 18 to 30 within the City's
Public Works Department.
Applications for the City Hall Apprenticeship Program are now open
until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2024. To apply and nd more
information, please visit the Kern Community Foundation's of cial
website at https://www.kernfoundation.org/bakers eld-youth-jobs-
program/ or call the Kern Community Foundation at 661-616-2610.
Participants must be at least 18 years old by March 1, 2024, and no
older than 30 years old by September 30, 2024 in order to be
eligible.
Launching as part of the Bakers eld Youth Jobs Program, this
innovative initiative aims to empower young individuals with hands-
on training and skills development while fostering a pathway to
meaningful careers in public service. Throughout the program,
Apprentices will engage in maintenance, repairs, and overhaul of

vital city equipment, receiving comprehensive training in diagnostics,
repair procedures, welding, and fabrication.
Apprentices will be expected to work 20 hours per week and will
earn $23 per hour. In addition to hands-on experience, participants
will bene t from ongoing support and career development services
from the Kern Community Foundation, including mentorship,
professional workshops, and travel stipends.
The City Hall Fellowship is a component of the Bakers eld Youth
Jobs Program. Funded by a $5.39 million grant from California
Volunteers and the State of California, the program offers ve tracks,
including a paid high school summer internship, a paid college-level
fellowship program, a paid apprenticeship program, a paid recreation
internship, and collaborations with non-pro t organizations to
employ at-risk youth.
Kroll Park swings replacement project completed
The swing replacement project at Kroll Park (7501 Kroll Way) has
been completed! The temporary fencing around the project has been
removed and kids can enjoy the new swing set with shade structures
brought to you by the Public Safety & Vital Services (PSVS) Measure,
also known as Measure N.
The project cost $61,869 and was completed in about two weeks.
Sidewalk improvements ($35,496) are also planned at Kroll Park.

Ribbon cutting held for farm labor housing Brentwood
Crossing
Affordable housing developer Danco Group, along with the City of
Bakers eld, celebrated a new farm labor affordable housing
development on Friday, Feb. 16.
Brentwood Crossing - located off Niles Street just east of Fairfax
Road in East Bakers eld - brings 58 single-family homes to
Bakers eld. The total cost of the development was approximately

$32 million. Through the Permanent Local Housing Allocation, the
City provided more than $1.2 million in support.
Mayor Karen Goh, Vice Mayor Andrae Gonzales (Ward 2), interim
Economic & Community Development Director Jenni Byers, ECD
Manager Jason Cater, ECD Planner Paige McCallister, and others
were on-hand to cut the ribbon on Friday.
Among the 58 new units, some of which are already occupied, are 30
two-bedroom houses, 20 three-bedroom units and eight four-
bedroom units. According to Danco Group, rent for the units ranges
from $200 a month to $1,000 per month. The housing development
also includes a playground, a picnic/barbecue area, recreation room
with TV and games, and a half-basketball court.
With an estimated one in six jobs in Kern County directly related to
agriculture, Brentwood Crossing will directly bene t the local
workforce.

Thousands "Cycle Centennial," celebrating new freeway
Following the ribbon cutting for the new Centennial Corridor, more
than 2,000 local bike riders took to the still-closed freeway for Cycle
Centennial, a special event hosted by the Blue Zones Project-
Bakers eld the morning of Saturday, Feb. 10.
Riders young and old were invited to ride nearly the entire 1.5-mile
stretch of the Centennial Corridor Mainline roadway. The City is
working with Caltrans to get the project reviewed and approved for

vehicle traf c and the of cial opening will be announced on our
social media channels once that date is nalized.
Nearly 50,000 pounds of trash collected at pop-up
event
The City of Bakers eld's Solid Waste Division collected 44,360
pounds of trash at its a pop-up large item drop-off event on Feb. 10 in
the parking lot of the Bakers eld Municipal Airport.

Almost 400 vehicles came through to drop off items such as metal
(3,060 pounds), e-waste (260 items), tires (30), mattresses (73) and
more.
These events are part of Bakers eld's Clean City Initiative.
