Friday, March 1, 2024 Notable Items "Mr. Bakerseld" retires after almost 40 years with City After nearly 40 years of dedicated service, Visit Bakerseld Manager David Lyman is retiring. Mr. Lyman worked at Visit Bakerseld since 2012, having started with the City in the previous iteration of the Economic & Community Development Department in 1984. He is known as "Mr. Bakerseld" to City staff - and likely some others as well! - because of his deep historical knowledge of Visit Bakerseld Manager David Lyman is retiring after almost 40 years of service with the City of Bakerseld! At Wednesday's City Council meeting, Mr. Lyman was presented the Mayor's Medal by Mayor Karen Goh and received a plaque from City Manager Christian Clegg in recognition of his decades of service (below). The consummate customer service professional, everyone who interacted with him at the visitors center on Truxtun Avenue (near the Amtrak Station) left knowing a little more about Bakerseld and probably with a story to tell their family and friends when they went home. Record-setting day for housing placements at the BLNC Exciting news from the Brundage Lane Navigation Center: The BLNC recently sent 12 individuals into permanent housing in a single day - a record for a single day since the BLNC opened in October 2020! City of Bakerseld Homeless Hub Bakerseld Fire task force team participates in emergency drill This week the Bakerseld Fire Department engaged in a Mobilization Exercise (MOBEX) designed to evaluate the Fire Department’s Regional Task Force (RTF- 11) capabilities. On Tuesday, Feb. 27 at the Olive Drive Fire Training Facility, the MOBEX simulated a 6.4-magnitude earthquake, including collapsed buildings and trapped victims with injuries ranging from non-injured to deceased. The drill took several months to plan and was funded by the California Ofce of Emergency Services (Cal OES) which provided the department with $77,000 for equipment specic to the drill as well as personnel costs. The MOBEX was evaluated by Cal OES and the California Specialized Training Institute which critiqued the RTF-11’s abilities in several categories: dispatch, deployment, search and rescue operations, and demobilization. The RTF-11 was also judged on its use of existing software to plan, assess, and coordinate search and rescue operations using both national and state models. Bakerseld’s RTF-11 is one of only 11 regional task forces in the state of California capable of deploying up to 30 trained members statewide for a variety of emergencies including earthquakes, large storms, oods, dam failures, terrorist activities, and hazardous materials releases. 3/1/24, 4:04 PM Bakersfield Notes 03.01.2024 https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/0fc3e7782f194e2082862c36c4250b32/print 4/14 Overall, Bakerseld Fireghters performed well during its rst MOBEX and received positive feedback from the drill’s evaluators regarding individual and team performance, especially in the areas of communication, crew cohesion, collaboration, accountability, and trust. Areas for improvement were also identied by evaluators in Tuesday’s drill and Cal OES will be presenting a detailed review in the coming weeks. The department intends to reinforce its strengths and develop a plan and timeline for addressing the areas identied for improvement. On Monday, Feb. 26, Mayor Karen Goh, Vice Mayor Andrae Gonzales (Ward 2), Councilmember Bob Smith (Ward 4) and City staff were on hand for the grand opening of new affordable homes. There are 39 one-bedroom homes available to those with income less than 30% of the area median income (AMI). The City contributed $1 million to this project through the Public Safety & Vital Services Measure (Measure N). Saunders Park sump wall and pavilion fence improvements completed! Some great news for everyone who enjoys Saunders Park in Ward 2: The park's sump wall and pavilion fence rehabilitation project have been completed! 3/1/24, 4:04 PM Bakersfield Notes 03.01.2024 https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/0fc3e7782f194e2082862c36c4250b32/print 6/14 The project saw the replacement of the chain link fence that separates the park and the sump with a new concrete block wall and the replacement of the chain link fence around the perimeter of the indoor sports pavilion with a new wrought iron fence. The project cost a little more than $785,000 and was paid for through federal Community Development Block Grant funds. San Miguel Grove parking lot project complete, open to the public 3/1/24, 4:04 PM Bakersfield Notes 03.01.2024 https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/0fc3e7782f194e2082862c36c4250b32/print 7/14 The parking lot at San Miguel Grove is back open to the public after the completion of a rehabilitation project. The project began in early February as crews completely removed and repaved the parking lot, which now features green bike lanes. The total cost of the project was just over $147,000 and was funded by the Public Safety & Vital Services Measure (Measure N).
