Water Resources to reduce river ows for emergency
repairs
The City’s Water Resources Department is reducing water ows in
the Kern River to complete critical maintenance needed near the
McClung Weir due to damage caused by historic ows during the
2023 calendar year.
The ows will be reduced starting on Friday, May 10, to dry the
McClung Weir work area west of the Highgate at Seven Oaks

community. This emergency maintenance is necessary to ensure the
city continues operating the Kern River in a safe and controlled
manner. Repair and maintenance work is anticipated to begin in
June.
The Water Resources Department is committed to having water in
the river throughout the summer and intends to keep water owing
over and past the Bellevue Weir, adjacent to The Park at River Walk,
and into the recharge area, adjacent to River Front Park, until Labor
Day.
Swim lesson registration underway for Rec. & Parks
Swim lesson registration is now open for
the rst two-week session of summer.
Our Recreation & Parks Department will
offer four, 2-week sessions of American
Red Cross Learn to Swim lessons at Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr., Jefferson and Silver
Creek pools and at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center.

The rst session is scheduled to begin June 4. Registration dates will
stagger every two weeks to allow the public multiple opportunities
to register.
These swim lessons feature many levels of instruction to help
swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their skills.

MLK Community Center to host Rethink Your Drink
Day
Rethink Your Drink Day is a statewide promotion created by the
California Department of Public Health's CalFresh Healthy Living
program to encourage families to make healthier drinking choices.
Participating in Rethink Your Drink Day will help adults and children
identify drinks with added sugar and provide education about the
bene ts of healthy beverage choices.
A Rethink Your Drink Day event will be held Saturday, May 11 at the
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will offer a park walk with GirlTrek, Zumba, health and
wellness resources, games, raf es, and food boxes.
It's being held in partnership by the City's Recreation & Parks
Department, CalFresh, CAPK Food Bank and Anthem Blue Cross.
Registration now open for Rec. & Parks summer camps
With summer break right around the corner, you might be looking
for some options for your kiddos.
Our Recreation & Parks Department has you covered!
Registration is now open for summer camps at the Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. and Silver Creek community centers.
Anyone interested can register online, at either facility or call 661-
322-9874 or 661-665-8033 for more information and registration
packets.
Mandatory parent meetings for the camps will be held on May 29 for
the Martin Luther King Jr. camp and May 30 for the Silver Creek
camp. Each starts at 6 p.m.

City celebrates employees during Public Service

This week the City celebrated all the employees who go out of their
way to keep Bakers eld up and running for the hundreds of
thousands who call this home.

From May 6-10, the City held its annual Spirit Week, culminating
with a barbecue at Yokuts Park.

During the barbecue, senior City staff served employees lunch
catered by Fresco Mexican Grill.

Community comes out for Bakers eld Fire open house
On Saturday, May 4, the Bakers eld Fire Department held an open
house event at Station 1 for the City of Bakers eld.
The event offered an inside look as to what goes on in our Fire
Department as re ghters hosted demonstrations, interacted with
our community and talked about the importance of re safety.
