Friday, July 12, 2024 Notable Items BPD report shows pedestrian deaths dropped by half year over year in City of Bakerseld Pedestrian deaths in the City of Bakerseld dropped by 53% in 2023 compared to the previous year, along with a 17% reduction in deadly trafc crashes overall according to a public safety update provided by the Bakerseld Police Department. Bakerseld Police Chief Greg Terry provided the update to City Council on Wednesday. Bakerseld Notes 7/12/24, 3:55 PM Bakersfield Notes 07.12.2024 https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/f2183eae38b34a0dbcf34301e4d07c86/print 1/14 Data show there were 17 pedestrians killed in crashes in 2023, a signicant decline from the previous year's 36. "We had a signicant reduction in pedestrian fatalities in 2023 and we're continuing to see that trend go down," Terry said during his presentation. "That's a very positive thing. [Still] much work to be done around that in particular and I do think we can continue to make an impact and it's certainly worthy of our effort to do that." The police department sites four primary factors behind deadly trafc crashes: Speed, driving under the inuence of drugs and/or alcohol, a pedestrian in the roadway, and red light violations. There was also a 17% drop in deadly crashes overall, from 70 in 2022 to 51 in 2023. Not only that, but year-to-date in 2024, deadly trafc crashes are also down across the board compared to 2023. From January to June, total deadly crashes are down from 32 in '23 to 21 this year; vehicle-only crashes are down from 18 last year to 11; pedestrian deaths are down from 12 to eight. Only deadly crashes involving someone on a bike are the same as last year at two through June. 7/12/24, 3:55 PM Bakersfield Notes 07.12.2024 https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/f2183eae38b34a0dbcf34301e4d07c86/print 2/14 City names Phil Burns new Development Services Director The City of Bakerseld is pleased to announce the promotion of Phil Burns as its new Development Services Director effective July 15.
