Latest batch of City Hall Fellows celebrated after
successful run
The latest group of City Hall Fellows will soon start the next chapters
in their professional careers after a successful year working for the
City of Bakers eld.
On Friday, 22 fellows from the Bakers eld Youth Jobs Program were
celebrated during a ceremony in City Council chambers.

Each fellow provided an overview of their time with the City,
discussing what they learned and how their work experience will
help them moving forward.
During 2023-2024 scal year, more than 100 individuals were
employed across ve BYJP programs.
The City Hall Fellowship is a component of the Bakers eld Youth
Jobs Program, funded by California Volunteers.
The next period for City Hall Fellow applications is set to open later
this month.

Residents set to move in to latest affordable housing
project
Aiming to get more homeless individuals off the streets and into
permanent housing, the City of Bakers eld has committed more than
half a million dollars toward more affordable housing.

On Tuesday, July 30, a ribbon cutting and grand opening was held for
40 new homes at 889 Oak Street, a property that was formerly the
Red Roof Inn.
The City provided nearly $670,000 in Homeless Housing, Assistance
and Prevention (HHAP) funding to the Housing Authority of the
County of Kern (HACK) to help with the project. With this funding,
HACK will be able to provide permanent supportive housing services
to approximately 40 people experiencing homelessness within a
three-year timeframe.
On hand for the ribbon cutting were California Deputy Secretary of
Homelessness Dhakshike Wickrema, Mayor Karen Goh, Vice Mayor
Andrae Gonzales, along with other local leaders.
Heather Kimmel with HACK said individuals are tentatively
scheduled to start moving in Monday, Aug. 5.

Stakeholders discuss future of Niles-Monterey
Prosperity Neighborhood Initiative
City leaders and stakeholders gathered this week to discuss and
strategize enhancing the Niles and Monterey (NiMo) Prosperity
Neighborhood Initiative.
The discussion revolved around programs, strategies and methods
that would best help revitalizing the NiMo area.
During the session, stakeholders shared their thoughts, concerns
and ideas they believed will help in the progress of the NiMo
Prosperity Neighborhood Initiative.

The City is planning for the future of Bakers eld and needs YOU to
help!
As part of the 2045 General Plan Update, the City's Development
Services Department will be hosting multiple workshops in August.
The Policy 101 Workshop will allow you to participate in hands on
activities like policy design sprints and role-play challenges and
provide your input on key topics affecting our community.
An in-person workshop is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10 from 1-3
p.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center (1000 S.
Owens Street). A virtual workshop is tentatively scheduled for Aug.

GET Bus seeking public input on transit service
Golden Empire Transit (GET bus) is hoping to increase its ridership
and is looking for the public's input to help achieve that goal.
GET Bus has launched a community survey geared towards people
who have not used its services. The survey is designed to gather
insights and suggestions on how GET bus can encourage more
people to use public transit effectively.
The survey can be found at http://get2024survey.com or through the
QR code and in the yer below. The survey will be active through the
end of August.

City's spray parks are open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, Tuesday through Sunday
through Labor Day on Sept. 2.
Traf c Advisories
Oleander Avenue repaving project
set to start Monday, Aug. 5
A repaving project in the Oleander area is
scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 5,
improving the stretch of Oleander Avenue
between California Avenue and Brundage
Lane.
Work will take place 6 a.m. - 5 p.m. through Aug. 8.
Delays are expected.

The project is made possible thanks to Senate Bill 1 funding.
Portion of Kern River Multi-use Trail set for temporary
closure
Repair work is scheduled for a portion of the Kern River Multi-use
Trail beginning Monday, Aug. 5.
Crews will perform maintenance work on the trail along the Kern
River under Highway 99 through Thursday, Aug. 8.
One lane of the path will be available for travel, but caution is
advised for anyone using the trail.
*NOTE: Construction work may be postponed and rescheduled without
notice due to inclement weather and other unforeseen conditions.
