Eric Galvan Notable Items Water Department reduces river ows for required maintenance The City's Water Department has started reducing water ows on the Kern River to perform maintenance and address operational needs from the Stockdale Highway River Bridge to the east. During last year's historic water year, the Kern River observed ow rates that had not been seen in nearly 40 years. Maintenance near the Park at River Walk at the Bellevue Weir is needed to ensure the safe and controlled operation of the Kern River, as required by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Weir repair and sediment removal will begin in October 2024 once the area becomes accessible. City seeks public feedback on Active Transportation Plan As the City continues efforts to create a long-term vision for a safe Citywide pedestrian and bicycle plan, we're looking to the public to provide feedback to let us know what you want to see. The City's Public Works Department is seeking feedback for its Active Transportation Plan through an online interactive map that allows users to let us know what improvements they would like to see. Anyone interested can download and view the current report and provide feedback to City staff. The City's Recreation & Parks Department is extending spray park operations due to high temperatures. All spray parks were scheduled to close for the season on Labor Day, but Rec. & Parks has decided to provide the community with additional options to cool off. The City's Recreation & Parks Department has begun installing a new sidewalk on the south end of the park, along the playground and dog park, connecting to existing sidewalks. Rec. & Parks will also install tness equipment and water fountains in the future. The sidewalk improvements will cost $48,000 and are made possible thanks to the Public Safety & Vital Services Measure (Measure N). The closure on northbound Union Avenue at Highway 204 will begin at 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8 and is expected to last until 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9. Crews will be repaving the intersection. During this work, drivers are asked to avoid the area, or plan for addition travel time. Detours will be in place as follows: Drivers heading north on Union will need to use Highway 204 to Q Street, then Espee Street to Union Avenue. Drivers heading east on 21st Street will only be allowed to turn south onto Union Avenue. There will be no access westbound through the intersection from 21st Street. *Note: Construction work may be postponed and rescheduled without notice due to inclement weather and other unforeseen conditions.
