Help decide how to spend $25 million in federal HUD
funding
The public is invited to help decide how $25 million in federal
Housing & Urban Development (HUD) funds will be spent in the City
of Bakers eld over the next ve years.
The City's Economic & Community Development Department is
hosting three public meetings to help residents learn more about the
City's Consolidated Plan and provide feedback.

These funds are primarily spent on low- and moderate-income
communities to make improvements to infrastructure, homeless
prevention and services, community facilities and services,
affordable housing, and economic development.

Bakers eld plays host to California Transportation
Commission
Bakers eld played host to the California Transportation Commission
this week as commissioners from throughout the state descended
upon Kern County for one of their regular meetings.
The CTC met at the Kern County Board of Supervisors chambers
Thursday with a second meeting scheduled for Friday.
Commissioners were also treated to a train ride from Bakers eld up
to the Tehachapi Loop and were given a helicopter tour of projects
that were made possible thanks to the CTC.
During Thursday's meeting, retired Kern County Congressman Bill
Thomas was honored for his lifetime of work as a United States
Representative.
Bakers eld Councilmember Bob Smith, who also chairs the Kern
Council of Governments, provided an introductory welcome
presentation to the Commission.

Study: Bakers eld ranked No. 2 in U.S. for pedestrian
safety
The City of Bakers eld continues to prioritize pedestrian safety and
was recently recognized for its efforts on a national level.
A Forbes Advisor study ranked Bakers eld No. 2 for pedestrian
safety based on data from 2022.
The City of Bakers eld continues to look for ways to improve the
safety of all users of our roads, sidewalks and bike paths and trails,
including our Neighborhood Traf c Calming Program and
developing Safe Routes to Schools.
The City is also completing a demonstration project to improve
safety at Niles and Monterrey Streets where they intersect with
Beale Avenue.

In 2023, the City of Bakers eld received nearly $1.5 million in state
Highway Safety Improvement Program funds for street safety
projects. The public is invited to provide feedback on those projects
and more.

Members of BPD compete in National SWAT
Competition
Members of the Bakers eld Police
Department were among nearly 50
agencies competing in the National SWAT
Competition at Prairie Fire Nevada Oct. 9-
12.
Teams competed in an intense series of
“Brilliance in the Basics” events focused on
high-accountability pistol and ri e

marksmanship, and physically demanding tests of the mission-
relevant skills that SWAT operators rely on during real-world
operations, according to the Prairie Fire website.
The San Antonio Police Department won the competition, earning a
$75,000 prize.
City hosting multiple free events to celebrate
Halloween
The City's Recreation & Parks and Police departments will host
multiple free events next week to help families get into the
Halloween spirit.
Recreation & Parks will kick things off with its annual
Halloweentown event at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community
Center (1000 S. Owens St.) on Oct. 23. The event runs from 2-4 p.m.
The next day, on Oct. 24, the Bakers eld Police Department will host
its annual HalLAWeen event at its headquarters at 1601 Truxtun
Ave. HalLAWeen runs from 4-8 p.m. Anyone attending the event is
encouraged to park in the parking structure at 18th & Eye streets.
Rec. & Parks will wrap up festivities with its Halloweentown event at
the Silver Creek Community Center (7011 Harris Road) on Oct. 25.
That event runs from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
All of these events are family friendly and free to attend.

City seeks public feedback on Active Transportation
Plan
As the City continues efforts to create a
long-term vision for a safe Citywide
pedestrian and bicycle plan, we're looking
to the public to provide feedback to let us
know what you want to see.
The City's Public Works Department is
seeking feedback for its Active
Transportation Plan through an online
interactive map that allows users to let us
know what improvements they would like to see.
Anyone interested can download and view the current report and
provide feedback to City staff.
