Stakeholders gather to discuss opportunities to address
housing
Continuing efforts to address affordable housing, the City and its
partners gathered this week to discuss opportunities to help bene t
the community.
The Housing Symposium, held at the Bakers eld Museum of Art,
featured representatives from the City, County of Kern, Bakers eld-

Kern Regional Homeless Collaborative and the Housing Authority of
the County of Kern.
City Economic & Community Development Director Jenni Byers was
one of the speakers, discussing best practices in permanent
supportive housing development and programs offered through the
City.
City, Chelsea Investment Corp. break ground on
affordable housing project
The City of Bakers eld continues to prioritize affordable housing
options for our residents and broke ground Thursday morning on the
newest project aimed at helping low-income farmworkers.
Representatives from the City, including Mayor Karen Goh, Vice
Mayor Andrae Gonzales, Economic & Community Development
Director Jenni Byers and Public Works Director Zach Meyer, along

with reps from Chelsea Investment
Corporation, gathered to break ground on
the Auburn Vista Apartments in Northeast
Bakers eld.
The site will include 15 one-bedroom, 30
two-bed room and 15 three-bedroom
homes, with 59 designated for low-income
farmworkers.
The project received $500,000 in Public
Safety & Vital Services Measure funds
along with $1.3 million in Local Housing
Trust Fund monies from the state, and $1.2
million in American Rescue Plan funds from
the City.

Bakers eld Police welcomes newest graduates
The Bakers eld Police Department has added to its force, allowing it
to continue to protect and serve the citizens of Bakers eld.
On Thursday morning, the Bakers eld Police Department held a
graduation ceremony for the 10 individuals in Class 24-02.

"Many people think they know how to do the job of a police of cer.
But few actually step forward and attempt it. Fewer still meet the
quali cations and make it to where you are today," said Bakers eld
Police Chief Greg Terry. "Hold your head up high and be proud of
your accomplishment."

City hosting free Bulky Item Drop-off event Saturday
The City's Solid Waste Division is set to hold its nal FREE Bulky
Item Drop-off event of the year this Saturday, Dec. 14.
The event will be held at the Mesa Marin Sports Complex, 10315
Hwy. 178 from 8 a.m. to noon.

So far in 2024, the City has held seven drop-off events, collecting
nearly 150,000 pounds of trash, more than 57,670 pounds of metal
and 5,600 pounds of recycling.
Don't pour cooking grease down
drains! Recycle it for free year round!
With the holidays upon us, the City's Wastewater Division wants to
remind the public not to pour used cooking grease down drains!
Instead, you're encouraged to drop off used cooking grease and
dispose of it in a safe way for free.
The drop-off locations are:
The City's Wastewater Treatment Plant 3, 6901 McCutchen Road
North of the River Sanitary District main of ce, 204 Universe
Avenue
Kern UCO, 4031 Alken Street, Ste A5
Residents can drop it off between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day,
Monday through Friday (except for holidays).
Residents are asked to collect their used cooking oil and grease in
sealed containers before dropping it off at the locations.

New episode of The Something Better Podcast dropping
Tuesday!
Just in time for the holidays, a new episode
of The Something Better Podcast is
scheduled to drop Tuesday, Dec. 17.
James Leonard and Gustavo Medina from
the Solid Waste Division will be featured in
Ep. 5, discussing important programs
impacting the holidays, including trash
pickup schedules and the Christmas tree
recycling program.

City Communications team talks new podcast with high
schoolers
The City Communications & Marketing Manager, Megan Simpson
and Public Information Of cer, Joe Conroy, recently visited the
Video Production classes at CTEC to discuss the City’s new podcast,
The Sound of Something Better. During the session, they shared
insights into the podcast’s mission to highlight positive stories and
initiatives within the community.
They also offered students a behind-the-scenes look at the
production process, emphasizing the importance of storytelling,
audio editing, and effective communication strategies. The talk

provided valuable industry knowledge and inspired students to
explore opportunities in digital media and public communications.
Rec. & Parks looking for new bike
shop instructor for afterschool
program
The City's Recreation & Parks Department
is looking for a new instructor to help lead
the Build-A-Bike Program at the Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. Community Center.
The program, rst introduced in 2007,
allows students to take home a refurbished
bike after working in the MLK Community
Center bike shop. It is a free program for students with used bikes
being donated by the Bakers eld Police Department and members
of the community.
Anyone interested can contact the MLK Community Center at 661-
322-9874.
Joe O'Grady (right), the long-time bike shop
instructor of the Recreation & Parks
Department's Build-A-Bike program has retired,
leaving a void to be lled by someone passionate
about helping students learn the ins and outs of
bikes.
