BPD Chief leads 'staff walk' hoping to address crime
along Union
Bakers eld Police Chief Greg Terry is taking a new approach to help
combat crime in the community and his rst steps were literally
taken by walking the streets of Union Avenue.
On Tuesday, Chief Greg Terry led a staff walk along Union Avenue,
identifying what he calls environmental factors that ultimately lead
to crime.
Chief Terry was joined by Councilmember Andrae Gonzales (Ward
2), City Manager Christian Clegg, Assistant City Managers Rick
Anthony and Gary Hallen, interim Bakers eld Fire Chief Kevin
Albertson and Public Works Director Zach Meyer, along with
members of BPD and other City staff.
"Look at the environment, the environmental backdrop of where
crime has persisted in our City (and) beginning to look at, not the
people that are necessarily involved in it, although we are focused on
that, but we're also looking at the location," Chief Terry said as he
addressed the dozens on hand to take part in the walk. "What is it
about the location that's an attractant or a contributor to a
particular type of crime?

"And so we're going to be ... shifting a little bit about how we
approach and how we assess where the problems are occurring in
our City. And this is one of the rst places we're going to try to
implement that."
Those involved in the staff walk will debrief, discussing what they
saw, what could be contributors to crime and what solutions can be
implemented to improve safety.
