HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 165-04RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD IN OPPOSITION TO CALIFORNIA SENATE BILL 1462 (KUEHL) ESTABLISHING A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MILITARY GREENWAY COMMISSION FOR KERN, KINGS, LOS ANGELES, AND VENTURA COUNTIES WHEREAS, California cities and counties depend upon the ability of their local elected leaders to make sound land use decisions through local oversight, and WHEREAS, local municipalities are very aware of the importance, to the nation, to the state and local communities, of a strong national security and military presence within the State, and WHEREAS, a military presence in installations and training routes by their existence have a beneficial economic impact upon local communities and the State as whole, and WHEREAS, the City of Bakersfield encourages military security and economics activities for California communities depending on military exercise or training activities connected with military, and WHEREAS, the City of Bakersfield feels that local level land use decisions in mutually beneficial solutions of military issues at the local level should remain an integral part of any federal and state efforts to ensure the safety and viability of California communities and the nation as a whole, and WHEREAS, the establishment of a regional authority/commission over such local land use decisions takes away municipal land use abilities and will reduce the ability to find mutually acceptable solutions to problems which arise as growth and development occur in California communities which come into conflict with military training routes in key portions of Southern California as well as other parts of California, and WHEREAS, the Southern California Military Greenway Commission encompasses only the counties of Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, and Ventura, and WHEREAS, this bill increases the duties of local planning officials and creates a state-mandated local program while reducing local land use decision making. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield that the City of Bakersfield opposes the establishment of a Southern California Military Greenway Commission for Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, and Ventura as identified in Senate Bill 1462 (Kuehl) as it reduces land use decision making at the local level. ..........
