EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE
ACUTE:
Causes severe ~rritatton to eyes, and may cause blindness. May
cause deep, penetrating ulcers on skin. May cause severe irritation
of the respiratory tract and nasal septum and possible perforation.
CHRONIC:
· Prolonged or repeated eye contact may cause conjunctivitis.
Prolonged or repeated skin contact, espectal]y with broken skin, may
cause "chrome sores".
Prolonged or repeated inhalation of Sodium Btchromate dust and
mists may cause ulceration and perforation of the nasal septum.
Eptdemiologtcal studies indicate that long term exposure to high
levels of dust and mists in the Chromate producing industry is
associated with increases in respiratory tract cancer in man, the
causative agent is not known. Thus far eptdemiologlcal studies have
not demonstrated any ~ncreased r~sk of lung cancer at levels below
current TLV.
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES
EYES:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes
holding eyeltds apart to ensure flushing of entire eye surface.
Washing eyes within 1 minute is essential to achieve maximum
effectiveness. Seek medical attention immediately.
SKIN:
Wash contaminated areas with plenty of soap and water for at least
~5 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and footwear and wash
clothing before reuse. Discard ~ootwear which cannot be
decontaminated. Seek medical attention immediately.
INHALATION:
Get person out of contaminated area to fresh air. If breathing has
stopped, artificial respiration should be started. Oxygen may be
administered, if r~adtly available. If conscious irrigate nasal
passages and mouth with water. Seek medical attention immediately.
INGESTION:
Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Have
conscious patient drink several glasses of water and then induce
vom ttlng by having patient tickle back of throat with finger. Keep
airway clear. Seek medical attention t m mediately.
NOTES TO PHYSICIAN:
Masstve overexposure to solutions of thls product could lead to
kidney failure and death. Death has been av'otded . in several such
cases through the use of early renal dialysis. It has been reported
that ascorbtc actd administered intravenously ts an effective
antidote In preventing renal failure, Skin ulcers may be treated by
removal from exposures, daily cleansing and debrtdement, and
application of antibiotic cream and dressing.

STEPS TO BE TAKEN IF MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED:
Stop leaks. Remove as much as possible (e,g. vacuum truck).
Then treat the spill area with a reducing agent .to convert the
hexavalent chromium to the trtvalent form and neutralize with a weak
base. Following neutralization, soak up with inert absorbent
material (e.g. sand), place in a closed, labelled container and
st'Ore in a safe place to await dlsposal . NEVER FLUSH TO SEWER.
St'gnlftc'ant spllls should be reported to appropriate agencies.
NEUTRALIZING CHEMICALS:
Reduce hexavalent chromium with sodium btsu]fite, sodium sulfite,
ferrqus sulfate or ferrous chloride. Neutralize . with sodium
bicarbonate, soda ash, or lime.
WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD:
Hexa~alent chromium in solution, may be reduced to trtvalent
chromium by reducing agents, such as sodtum blsulflte, sodium
sulfite, sulfur dioxide, ferrous sulfate or ferrous chloride. The
reduced chromium may then be precipitated as the chromic oxtde by
.neutralizing to a pH 7.5 with soda ash, caustic soda, or lime. The
solid material may be disposed of via an approved chemical waste
landftl 1. Shipments should be manifested. Dispose of in accordance
with all federal , state and local health pollution requirements.
VIII. INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE CONTROL MEASURES
VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS:
Good industrial hygiene practice dtctates that the work area be
isolated and contained and be provided with adequate local exhaust
ventlla.tton where dust or fumes may be generated (see Sectton II for
applicable control levels) . The number of persons exposed should be
minimized.
Certain processes like chrome pigment production, high temperature
welding or cutting, etc., 'may form materials more hazardous to
humans. These materials may be the formation of slightly soluble
salts (barium, zinc, calcium or other chromates) or fumes of
chromium/chrom!um., oxide, respectively which are known to be human
carcinogens, Engineering controls and local exhaust ventilation is
required to ensure that worker exposure is below current TLV,
SPECIFIC PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
RESPIRATORY:
A NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator should be used following
manufacturer's recommendation, where dust, mists, fumes or vapors are
generated.
EYE:
Face shield and goggles or chemical goggles should be worn.
GLOVES:
Industrial grade rubber or plastic gloves shou'ld be worn.
OTHER CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT:
Protective clothing should b~ worn when handling this product.
Protective clothing should be changed at least ~ai'ly. Wash
contaminated clothing with soap and water and dry before reuse.
Advise the laundry of the material contaminating the clothing.
Shower and eyewash facilities should be accessible.
MONITORING EXPOSURE
PERSONAL/AREA:
Air samples may be collected and analyzed by NIOSH P&CAM. (method)
NOS. Sll?, S352.

Wash thoroughly after handling (take shower after work using plenty
of soap; use fresh clothing dai'ly) .
Store in tightly closed containers away from combustible materials.
Container, when EMPTY, remains hazardous; dispose.in accordance
with applicable laws and regulations.
FIRST AID:
IN CASE OF CONTACT:
For eyes:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of Water for at least 15
minutes. Hold lids apart to ensure flushing of entire surface.
SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.
For skin:
Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15
minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse.
Discard contaminated shoes. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.
IF INHALED:
Move to fresh air. If conscious, irrigate nasal passages and
mouth with water. If breathing has stopped, apply artificial
respiration; administer oxygen if readtly available. SEEK MEDICAL
ATTENTION.
IF SWALLOWED:
If conscious, give several glasses of water to drtnk and induce
vomiting by having patient tickle back of throat with finger.
Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. SEEK
MEDICAL ATTENTION.
NOTE TO PHYSICIAN:
See Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) , Ml052, for more detailed
information for first aid and safe handling.
IN CASE OF SPILL OR LEAK:
Follow precautionary statements. Shovel or soak up spilled
material into a plastic or steel container and reuse or remove to ·
agent (e.g. sodium bisulfite) . then neutralize with soda ash or lime;
remove to approved chemical , waste disposal area. Flush area with
water, directing runoff to appropriate treatment or disposal
container. NEVER .FLUSH TO SEWER. Major spills should be reported
according to regulations.
