The following hazard classifications are based upon the information provided in the manufacture's MSDS. EXEMPT QUANTITIES ALLOWED IN A SPRINKLERED B-2 OCCUPANCY CORROSIVES: 10,000 POUNDS = EXEMPT QUANTITY 4,000 lbs "Summit" 1,500 lbs = 150 gal "Interest" 200 lbs "Activ-8" 3,600 lbs = 360 gal "Perform" Total proposed = 9,300 lbs. corrosive materials CLASS 2 OXIDIZERS: 500 POUNDS = EXEMPT QUANTITY 250 lbs "MonoChlor" = Total proposed class 2 oxidizers CLASS 1 OXIDIZERS: 8,000 POUNDS = EXEMBT QUANTITY 1,200 lbs = 120 gal "Bacti-chlor" = Total proposed class 1 oxidizers Walco's proposal for storage of hazardous materials at 4800 New Horizon is allowable in a B-2 occupancy. Hazard identification signs will be required. The acids should be segregated from.the chlorinated products and bases by at least 20 feet due to chemical incompatibility. SEC 80.107 OF THE UNIFORM FIRE CODE Visible hazard identificatiOn signs as specified in U.F.C. Standard No. 79-3 shall be placed at entrances to lOcations where hazardous materials are stored, dispensed, used or handled in quantities requiring a permit.. Signs shall be provided at specific entrances designated by the chief. Individual containers, cartons or packages shall be conspicuously marked or labeled in accordance with nationally recognized standards. See also Section 80.301 (d). SEC 80.301 OF THE UNIFORM FIRE CODE (n) Separation of Incompatible Hazardous Materials, Storage of incompatible hazardous materials shall' be separated. EXCEPTION: Containers of solids or liquids having a capacity of less than 5 pounds or 1/2 gallon when stored in quantities not exceeding exempt amounts. Separation shall be aCcomplished by:' 1. Segregating incompatible hazardous materials storage by a distance of not less than 20 feet. 2. Isolating incompatible hazardous materials storage by a noncombustible partition extending not less than 18 inches above and to the sides of the stored material, or;, 3. Storing in hazardous materials storage cabinets or gas cabinets. materials which are incompatible shall not be stored within the same cabinet. Walco will need to contact this office for approval prior to increasing any of the haz mat storage quantities because portions of the allowable exempt quantities may have been filled by other tenants sharing the same control area (building). They must also file a hazardous material management plan and inventory with in the first 30 days of facility occupancy. The enclosed forms should be used to file the plan and inventory. Storing in hazardous materials storage cabinets or gas cabinets. materials which are incompatible shall not be stored within the same cabinet.' SEC 80.301 OF THE UNIFORM FIRE CODE (o). Hazardous Materials Storage Cabinets. 1. General. When storage cabinets are used to comply with this article, such cabinets shall be in accordance with this subsection. "" EXCEPTION: Compressed gases shall be stored in cabinets designed in accordance with Section 80.303. Cabinets shall be conspicuously labeled in red letters on contrasting background "Hazardous -- Keep Fire Away." 2. Construction. Cabinets shall be constructed of metal. The interior of cabinets shall be treated, coated or constructed of materials that are nonreactive with the hazardous material stored. Such treatment, coating or construction shall include the entire interior of the cabinet. Cabinets shall either be listed as suitable for the intended storage or constructed in accordance with the following: A. Cabinets shall be of steel having a thickness of not less than 0.044 inch (18 gage). The cabinet, including the door, shall be double walled with 1 1/2 inch airspace between the walls. Joints shall be riveted or welded and shall be tight- fitting. Doors shall be well fitted, self-closing and equipped with a self-latching device, and B. The bottoms of cabinet~ utilized for the storage of liquids shall be liquid tight to a minimum height of 2 inches. For requirements regarding electrical equipment and devices within cabinets used for the storage of hazardous gases or liquids, see the Electrical Code. Walco must also file a hazardous material management Plan and inventory with in the first 30 days of facility occupancy, The enclosed forms should be used to file the plan and inventory.
