HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 120-90RESOLUTION NO. 120-90 A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIR?~ DECLARING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., DAY A CITY HOLIDAY. WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was a man of impressive moral presence who devoted his life to the fight for full citizenship rights of the poor, disadvantaged, and racially oppressed in the United States; and WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was the most influential civil rlghts leader in the United States in the 1950's and 1960's; and WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., organized the massive March on Washington, where some 250,000 Americans of all faiths, races, and creeds joined him and other civil rights leaders in an unprecedented demonstration of solidarity in support of civil rights legislation; and WHEREAS, the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was instrumental in drawing the attention of the nation to the inequity of the disparate treatment of people of different races and economic classes, and paved the way for the enactment by Congress of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; and WHEREAS, in 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent struggle for civil rights; and WHEREAS, in 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., launched a voter registration drive in Selma, Alabama, which concluded with a "freedom march" of 25,000 people from Selma to Montgomery in support of the drive for black voting rights; and WHEREAS, following the Selma "freedom march", Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965; and WHEREAS, in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., organized a "Poor People's Campaign" to unite the poor of races in a fight against poverty; and all WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated on April 4, 1968. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield as follows: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, the third Monday in January, shall be a city holiday commencing in the 1990-1991 fiscal year, and thereafter, and all city offices shall be closed. This shall be in addition to the twelve holidays currently scheduled. .......... o0o ..........
